hi all, im thinking of getting a fishtank heater but i dont know how big to go.

does anyone use a FT heater and if so, how big ( in watts) is it

or if anyone uses a different type of heater, then id like to know

Hi beer I use couple of heaters one is a fish tank type heater 75 watts thee other is a belt heater.

I have some fish tank heaters.. They are 25w “FISH R FUN” Aquarium Heaters and capable of handling up to six gallons at a set temperature, ranging between 16 – 32°C.
They cost about £10.00 each.

they seem to work well enough until I get clumsy.
£6.49,posted,cheap as chips. My brewing done in 18°C ambient,uninsulated 25 litre vessels.

i think il order a 75watt one.

Check the max temp first with plain water (same volume as the wash) and a separate thermometer. It can happen that the temp goes way higher that what you would like before the thermostat switches off and that can kill the yeast.

The use of thermometers to check thrmometers reminds me of the old adage, “qui observat vigilum”, or as Juvenal has it in his Satires, “ ..Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? .
Not that I'm not in agreement with the suggestion. Indeed, one of the first things I do with any such equipment is to check it against something I already feel I know is accurate.

50watt heater came today... absolutely perfect for the job and very compact too
