In a local Home Extra shop is see they are selling Britta style water filters for £2.99 including 1 free carbon filter (the spec is the same as filters that cost 10 times more). Are these style of filter of any use? I've been told ill need to filter the vodka twice to take the impurities out. I'm using a SS turbo air still and the wash is made with alcotec vodkastar yeast. I'll dilute the product to 40% using filtered water too.

Two things to think about

Firstly Brita or copies may use material designed just for water, there is always a danger that alcohol may cause the wrong kind of plastic to leach into it not nice
Secondly these types of filters are far faster than proper alcohol ones like EZ or essencia and generally speaking its the slower the better for filtering , more time in contact with carbon etc

The old saying of getting what you pay for is often correct yes some stuff is overpriced but IMHO that sounds too cheap

ps probably fine for filtering water for your washes or diluting spirit though

Thanks for that AT. I'm very tempted to just try it as on closer inspection it actually IS a de-branded britta filter that uses genuine britta activated charcoal. I might just filter one lot through it and see if I can tell the difference and report back. I'll take a photo and list the spec of the filter later.

There are several threads on this site with regard to using plastic storage vessels for high strength spirits and a very good article in the parent web site about Britta filters.

Can you tell the difference between a spirits that has, and has not got, dissolved plasticisers in them? I could not and would not want to try.

Sorry if this sounds a bit heavy but we are only thinking about your health, there are other safer methods to use.

Not at all fellas. Thanks for the advice. It is all taken on board. I'll check this particular filtering forum out and see if I can come up with a homemade cost effective alternative.
