Micronized Crops

Postby gaza the instructor » Tue Sep 05, 2017 9:14 pm

Firstly I hope the spelling is correct.
On a visit to my local farm food supplier today to buy
some blackstrap, I had a chat regarding crops.
Micronized and flaked barley, wheat and corn.
Are they of use to us for ferments. Have used the Wheat
to make Vodka, but only to add a little flavour.
What about the Barley?
Rather have a full bottle in front of me
than a full frontal lobotomy

From my understanding of micronization, the flavour will be there.
It may be more sludgey, and take longer to clear are my thoughts.
Hey, what do I know ;D

Well Goog was no help so I'm guessing ground, as I don't know.
And I don't know that either, but sounds a recipe for sludge.... :o

Only used small amounts at a time, like 2kg per
25ltr warmed thru in a pot to about 60c for
15mins added to sugar and fermented into Vodka
very nice it was too.
So no good with the Barley to add some flavour
then???

I'm sure it would add flavour.
I use just over 4KG of rough ground Barley/25 litres water in my whisky.
It has three days to ferment and is then racked.
Until someone tells me that Micronized will rack without too much sludge, then I leave it to you fly boys ;D

So 4kg in a B.I.B.A in my big pot 10 l water.
Mash at 60 or so for an hour . Sparge with some hot water.
Add say 4kg sugar ferment. How does that sound.

I'll say interesting :)
Sounds high in sugar to me, but personal preference is just that.
If it works for you, I may be tempted. ;)
