I finally got a brew fridge and dual socketed temperature probe/control. Soooo Im about to put a 9 bag (kilo) sugar wash on using Double Snake C48. The pack says wash must be between 18 & 24 degrees. When I do an 8 bag it hits 32 degs! We shall see how the fridge copes with the heat generation. Will report back in 7 to 10 days time ;)

Hi makum101

Please tell me you are making at least 40litre washes, 9kg of sugar is far too much for a 25litre wash, it's simply too much sugar, it will give off flavours and taste like shit.

I know the pack says it will ferment 9kg of sugar but the extra alcohol isn't worth the loss of quality compared to using less sugar for a better quality wash, the C48 is supposed to be their better version as it's not as fast as the C24, personally I've tried it with 6kg in a 25litre wash and I wasn't overly impressed.

If I was you I would drop the sugar to 5kg, maybe 6kg maximum and use a VodkaStar if your intention is just for a sugar wash neutral, all it takes is a week longer to ferment one more wash to catch up and pass the amount of alcohol from a 9kg C48, and it will yield a much cleaner tasting spirit once stripped and run with proper cuts.

I am watching out for the results.
I think too think it will be a poor product.... But they did once say the earth was flat ???

I do think temp management could be a real issue. I would consider a simple pc cabinet fan in the fridge.

Ive been using C48 with 8 bags of sugar for ages. No off flavours when run through the still twice. See my earlier posts on this thread, come out as clean as vodka star imo. Never done 9 as had no way to keep it cool. Its doing nicely in the fridge one day in.

One day in ive got the thermo hot cold switch set to 23 degrees. Its climbing to 23.3 then the fridge fridge powers up and takes about 5 mins to drop it back to 23 and turns off. The temp then falls to 22.9 before starting to climb back up. One whole cycle takes a little over an hour. Ive also noticed its no where agressive as the 8 bag version which I do at around 27 degrees. A lot less air lock activity.

I am interested to see how this works out for you.
It is not a path that I would follow.
Does not mean that it is wrong!

Day 10 todayand should (according to the packet) be done by now. Its sitting at 1.020 & still bubbling away. Ive kept it at 23 degz up to now. Tonight I've given it a good stir and upped it to 24 degz to see if that will finish it off over night.

@ Makum101
My limited experience with these high alco
turbos is if you keep temp up at 24-28c, they
pop and bang the airlock like an Essex Pro.
Then 6-8 Days later die down just as quick.
Be patient keep temp up your nearly there.
It should drop to below 1000 and all.
By the way not a fan, to many off flavours.
Try Vodka Star, not a true turbo but, easy,
cheap and 14% in 6-7 Days.

Cheers. I have used vodka star before. Problem is 14% is not a high enough yeild to use Almanac's method with the little smart still. Hence me using DS C48 with 8 bags. I always run twice - once to strip and then a 2nd which removes all the flavours left by the turbo (or at least it does with Double Snake C48 / 8 bag method). Reason why I kept the temp lower is the pack states a 9 bag wash must be kept under 24 degz. I think you are right in that I should have raised the temp after the first 4 top 5 days though. Will try that next time. I've gradually raised it to 26 degz and it flying again. down to 1.010 today, hopefull will ferment out by tomorrow then its off to the still.

Are you confusedly thinking that the method quoted by Almanac and others before him call for a set, rigid wash finishing percentage?
They don't, they are an illustrated guideline, and not a follow by rote set of instructions.

I have to confess that even with vodka star that I'm a big fan of, I still think there is an off flavour compared to yeasts with no nutrient added. Not awful, but a minor funk and I have yet to decide if I think it's worth it considering the much shorter ferment.

I agree and I don't think it's worth it.

With a 14% wash (6 bags) I coundnt get the yeald or strength Almanac listed without massive off flavours coming through even after the 2nd run. Tried with 7 bags which was a lot better, then 8 which allowed me to reach the yeald / strength stated on first run (watered down = 30%) and couldnt detect any offs after 2nd run at all.

9 bag wash 12 days in now reading 1.005
