I think I might try that vodka star. Sounds better than the SS Range.

I\'m gonna try maverick50s bakers yeast wash while I wait for my usual delivery, I\'ve heard that bakers yeast likes a higher temp, anyone know what\'s ideal?

Okay, bakers yeast wash on and keepin to temp with an aquarium heater set at 30c, first bubble within 10 mins. Weirdly my vodka star popped through the letterbox this morning too so I couldn\'t resist firing one of those up too. For a side by side comparison, will keep you posted. Forgot to take start sg so ill have to distill it to know for sure.

ok finally finished the comparison of these two washes and the results were as follows;
vodka star fermented dry to 0980 in 5 days and produced 7 litres @ 40% cost £9.80 = £1.40/litre
allinson bakers yeast fermented to 1006 in 21 days (though i did have to add 2 extra teaspoons of yeast nutrient after 7 days as fermentation had slowed significantly) kept to 30c with an aquarium heater produced 4.5 litres @ 40% cost £3.50 = 78p/litre + unknown cost of electricity (would guess at £1 or so)
i must say i was very happy with the clean smell and taste of the spirit produced by the bakers yeast, probably due to the slowness of the fermentation, and i will be making both again when i have worked my way through what i currently have in stock

Hey guys, have been doing a bit of reading as i am looking at starting up a non turbo yeast wash.
Found that in a 23L wash:
4kg sugar is prefered,
tsp citric acid,
tspn DAP(Diamonioum phospate),
pinch of epsom salts,
1/2 cup bakers yeast
Starting SG of 1070-1080 for best results. You could probably try upping the sugar volume but may be the reason why it doesnt fully ferment.
Should take 11-14 daysto ferment dry,and a week to clear on its own.
Easiest plain sugar wash i have found other than a tomato paste wash.
Want to try one as soon as i have a spare fermenter,i have a SS Classic,SS triple, and an alcotec48 all going at the mo.
Distilling the classic this weekend so may go ingredient shopping.

what was the start SG on the bakers yeast hoppin?
hi warrior, i forgot to check start sg tbh so had to wait until i distilled it to find out how much alcohol it had produced. it came straight out of the still @ 40% cut at 800ml per 4lt of wash, did taper off somewhat on the last boil but it was constantly 40 up til then and VERY clean tasting. i did carbon filter it but didnt feel the need to redistil.
cheers, hoppin

Thanks for the info hoppinmad, that\'s great! It\'s something that can take a while to sink in, it certainly did for me - you see the claims on a packet of turbo and think naturally that \'bigger is better\' with the numbers. Turbos are definitely faster and you do wring the most from your materials, but when you factor in the cost of carbon, turbo klar, the cost of the yeast itself, it can often end up costing more per litre than the bakers yeast, which as you said is a clean ferment.
For anyone who hasn\'t tried one, I\'d seriously recommend it to broaden your knowledge if nothing else - also, my personal feeling is that the less chemicals you put in the better - although you can put your own nutrients, etc in you\'re sort of creating a half-turbo - fair enough for speed and cost reasons, but it\'s good to try a \'natural\' one even if it takes a little longer, to give the biggest contrast to a turbo. 5/6 bags of sugar, 1 mini tin tomato paste, dash of lemon juice, half tin bakers yeast, warm place... not too taxing really!

thanks jimmy,
im also keen to try goinbroke2\'s corn whisky recipe soon, that uses bakers yeast and he says that it needs no filtering, just a lump or two of oak. i currently have a bottle of 40% spirit with a few 10mm cubes of 3 year seasoned applewood from my own tree which i roasted in the oven on high for 1/2 an hour. i must say its coming on nicely
cheers, hoppin

Yeah, that one is on my list too hoppin - although I have struggled so far to find a source of cracked corn, they don\'t have it at the pet shops I\'ve visited. I\'ll get there eventually!
