Good point Seagull...I think folks have used them in the past???...maybe well worth a try, say 200ml in a jar with a small chip and do a smell & taste??

You're probably right Ice. An accelerant would probably ruin their flavour anyway, so unlikely I suppose.

I'm going to pick some up and try it out, cautiously.

I picked a bag of these up at the weekend - they do smell pretty nice.

I've checked the packaging, and there are no lists of ingredients or anything that suggests an accelerant has been added, and I'd be surprised if it had, as the idea is they burn slowly to generate that aromatic smoke.

The only thing I did find was a warning that you might get cancer if you use them in California.. but then of course most things in California give you cancer, apparently

ps - I'm going to soak some of mine in a litre of neutral for a few days and see what happens - no nuking here, as the kilner-lookalike is well-bound in metal. Anyone want to suggest a suitable grammage?

Well 100g have been sitting in 1L neutral since this morning. Already a golden hue as developed, and a very JD-like flavour is appearing. Another day or two, I reckon!

The kilner jars come apart at the hinge really easy. Hold the lid. Pop one hinge to the center. Lift out - other follows. Pull flat ring off. Catch comes away.

Nuke it.

I nuke with "wire free" lid on.

Nuke it.

Reassemble in reverse.

Nuke it.

Make sure the catch is the right way up.

Just to be clear - I don't think Mash was suggesting to nuke it again after re-assemblign the metal catch. Though I have heard that modern microwaves are OK with metal. I would not care to test that theory with hot ethanol in it.

Visited our local JTF this afternoon and those oak chunks cost me two camping chairs, 3 bags of compost, a new water butt and a bunch of other stuff I wasn't planning on buying

Got some steeping already which have had one blast in the microwave.

No he wasn't.
