Good Deal On Molasses
The price for the 25L of molasses is a good one for you guys living in north Yorkshire or Cumbria - they will delivery nationally too, but it will cost you for these heavy items.
I opted for delivery, 50l molasses and a 25kg bag of maize cost less than a score to deliver - and was still cheaper than I could buy locally.
- might not want to get molasses and corn delivered to your semi-detached though
nothing suspect about that

Re: Good Deal On Molasses
Coincidentally I had just been reading this Rum recipe and was wondering where to buy Molasses.

I seem to be able to follow the logic of this proceedure and it does not appear to require the use of a dunder pit.

Is this a reasonable first recipe for rum? or can you recommend a better (easier/nicer) one.

I can't see past Pugirum for a dark rum, or pints fast fermenting molasses wash both over on AD.
They sound more complicated written down than in practice, but once you have done it once, its a skoosh.
You don't need a dunder pit, but adding dunder (even straight from the boiler to the next wash - will start to add complexity to future generations.
I'm starting to get caramel and raisin notes in my rum - and a slight chocolate\coffee thing going on in the nose.
Someone even suggested adding a slice of the mold from the pit to the boiler on the spirit run - he makes good rum by other peoples tastings, so I might give that a go.

It makes a great rum - the tins are 454g and the sugar content is 64% - messing about with all those little tins is a major PITA and a messy process.
Yes you can do it - but you might not want to do it twice after the first go
I normally shoot for about 20% (of the total volume) molasses with my washes - but treacle is a lot thicker so I'd use less and make up the difference with molasses sugar (pricey) or brown sugar.
I then top up with white sugar to push the ABV towards 10%

I didn't answer your question - I'd use 10 tins for a wash that size, that's about 2.9kg of sugar, so maybe another 2 - 2.5kg of other sugar to bump the ABV.
Hydrometer is useless apart from telling you when its stopped dropping.

If you take the lids off and sit them in a basin of hot water for a bit, it will make it less viscous for pouring into the fermenter.
Its still a messy old business dealing with those wee tins, if you get the nutrients right, it can be dry in 2 days, leave it a day or 3 then rack straight into the boiler and run.
