Air Still distillation breakdown
Re: Air Still distillation breakdown
Thanks for the advice Anavrin, I was thinking it would have to go back in a wash but the idea of running it again to get the ABV back up to 30% has pleased me
so thanks again
so thanks again-

Re: Air Still distillation breakdown
Anavrins suggestion of mixing it was good, also re-running at that strength would work.
Don't bother trying to get it up to 30%.
I am assuming that you are running an airstill?
I would not re-run as a strip run.It will come out at high ABV.
Do the run as you have seen talked about here, collect in small recepticales, and taste test the next day.
Wishing you luck.
Robert.

4 litres of anything greater than 0% should be distilled, left overnight to breathe, tasted, distilled again if required etc etc. Small containers are best with the first containers being given to your future ex mother in law and the last to your ex mother in law.

Curmudgeon, you are a wicked man, with some serious mother in law issues!
BTW, I can boast two such lovely ladies, sadly they were the mothers to my wives.
Thereby hangs another tale. Or two.
Robert.

Hi Mozr & other likeminded distillers . Love the technique you propose. I currently use multiple polishing runs through a column carbon filter to tidy up my distillation output. Was not performing cuts like you suggest but certainly will now. Question - has anyone used this mehod on a birdwaters (TPW) recipe and if so can you post comments regarding your results.

Yes it does. I have tried it.
Strip, spirit & cut is my mantra.
I then moved onto kale because it is more neutral to start with.

Re: Air Still distillation breakdown
Thanks for the replies Gazza and Mash. Have 50 litres of TPW nearing completion. Will be distilling using the processes spelt out in this thread (strip, spirit & cuts). I am about to purchase the airstill infusion basket and sit some copper catalytic coverter mesh in it as well as copper saddles in bottom of still ... any comments on the copper would be appreciated.
Thanks heaps, Snabby.

"purchase the airstill infusion basket"
There have been mixed reviews on this.
Search 'sputnik' on here, for another idea.

Snabby,
Your question was copper?
What you propose is enough, probably more than, don't fret.
My friend Mash sometimes gets carried away.
He sometimes taps faster than he reads, and wishes to preach his methods.
I cannot fault him in wishing to share, but sometimes folk need a little time
Robert.

Re: Air Still distillation breakdown
Thanks Mash & Easydrinker .. i am at the beginning of my learning curve .. yes i am really interested in wether or not copper can be used to advantage in the air still (minus a traditional vapour column). For expediency i think i will use the basket and saddles and see what happens.
MASH i will keep your 'sputnik' in the mix of options .. Thanks to u both for the guidance . VERY much appreciated.

Carried away indeed
You might be right sometimes.
I actually think copper in a basket might be a good idea. We have proved it unnecessary but everyone finds there own way.
I like the idea of wasting money, when a few reports have said how small this is.
That said... I think you are right... He is coppered up enough.

Thanks Mash ... will run some with and without copper and compare results ... wash is now at SG 0.990 with a very slow bubble rate, a few more days then degass, clear & distill .. getting excited, will let u know the outcomes.
Thanks again, Snabby.

Re: Air Still distillation breakdown
Thanks for all the great contributions here, another newbie not so far having much success with the Airstill.
Can anyone advise on an additional spirit run and whether the same cuts apply fores, heads, hearts and tails should be taken?
I started with 2l of 40% from my first run that I wasn't happy with, I topped up to around 3l with water and currently running through the Airstill.
Also if I want to use the Airstill for botanicals with the Sputnik do I take cuts on the spirit run?
