8 Litre Kilner Jars at Gee Tee's

I bought a couple of stainless steel taps @ £3.50 each plus £1.79 postage from:

Removing the silvered plastic tap from the Kilner Dispenser, the threaded section of the steel tap was a good fit. Not being sure whether the accompanying sealing washers were plastic or silicone, I purchased some cork washers from my local hardware/haberdashers shop. I used three, either side of the glass and tightened up. It worked a treat.

I am assuming that, given the history of cork in association with all manner of strengths of alcoholic beverages, it should be a safe choice?

Any one know where I can get the cork washers from ? Can't seem to fine the right ones on e bay

Cork should be ok.

But I have to say I went for the slightly more expensive one because it came with all the fittings and washers and key -- the measurements. Being an out die hard ebayer I have learnt that all is not necessarily what it might seem in the picture.

Thanks I have a shop like that about 1/2 hour away I will check with them , also the other tap is from hongkong and will take forever to come and probably come with a customs charge ... Oh fork handles lol "Classic "

Sorry to thread hijack but what are you all replacing the seal at the top with? Wilko have the 2 litre kilner cliptop jars in for £3 so I had a couple for aging stuff in but the seals are definitely rubber, I have found what claims to be silicone seals on eBay but I need to go measure up because I think they are too small for these bigger jars

I was thinking for gin. But even long term adding I would have thought they were ok as they are not in contact.

Mashy, my need to change them is probably from spending too much time on HDForums but are you happy to leave them on as long as they aren't in direct contact? Won't the vapour have any effect?

Rubber will perish in contact with alcohol liquid or fumes, it does not matter whether it is gin or not.

When I say perish it shrivels up and dries out, this is because of some of the constituents of the rubber leaching into the alcohol.

I have seen a rubber ball suspended above some 95% in a sealed jar, it dried out and basically was crumbly, the plasticisers had gone somewhere, presumably into the spirits, I am not saying the rubber of that ball was the same as the rubber in your jar, but who knows.

If you want to use it then that is your call but I get a bit twitchy when I see people being told it is safe, when really we do not know. HD may be over the top but they are only thinking of you.
