Can I use this for tomatoe paste wash?

Postby Anavrin » Sat Nov 15, 2014 9:09 pm

Hi guys

Just a quick one, is this ok for the Birdwatchers tomatoe paste wash? It's double concentrated so I guess I would use half the amount??

I read something about using a reduced salt version, what if it's high in salt? What problem does it cause?

It has the potential to kill the yeast or retard its reproduction. I doubt that the quantity in that jar would have any meaningful effect in a 25L wash.

Nope not me, Aidan I think.

It looks very similar to the stuff I use, I would not hesitate to use that.

If you have not started the wash yet, make sure that your fermenter is stood on something that is easily cleaned, or preferably stood in a bowl or sink. The wash foams like crazy and oozes everywhere. If you try and make the top of the fermenter airtight you will have thick red gooey stuff squirting all over, my shed always looks like one of the film sets from Fredie when I make this. I now start the wash off with a reduced amount of water and then gradually top it up once the initial violent ferment is over.

Not me either ::) I did post a caution about using the Birdwatcher's or TPW recipe because the original recipe calls for the addition of Citric Acid and the TP you get in this part of the world has Citric Acid added to it and there's no way of knowing how much. Also, I get the impression that TP wash works best in areas where there's higher levels of Sodium Carbonate which counters the acid in the TP.
