This is definitely something I really want to try but times are hard in the Anavrin house and I find myself needing to use up ingredients I already have, mainly molasses and sugar.

Anyone ever thought about mixing cane syrup with molasses to make a "Cachaca Rum"?

I'm thinking maybe use two big tins to of golden syrup (1800gr), 3 jars of Holland and Barret molasses and 3kg of white sugar in a 25lt wash.

I might put one of these down tonight, see how it gets on, any thoughts?

@Anavrin: And what do you intend to finish up with. Technically it is neither a rum nor a cachaca. Because it is an all sugar cane based product I would classify it as a rum. But it will not be a cachaca.

Hi RumJohn

No idea what it'll turn out like, maybe a slightly smoother Rum, I've just been calculating the sugar contents of Golden Syrup and Backstrap Molasses, I'm thinking for a 25lt wash,

3 x 907gr tins of Golden Syrup (equivelent to 2.19kg of sugar)
2 x 740gr jars of Molasses (equivelent to 830gr of sugar)
Plus 2 kg of sugar

Call it Cachaca Rum :-)

There's only one way to find out what Cachaca Rum tastes like, I've just put two washes down, recipe as above but 26lt of each, SG 1.080 @27°c, half a tin of allinsons in each.

It may not be Cachaca, but the next time I'm driving through Lancs,I would like to give it a whirl.
If I get to China, the first port of call has to be Rum John.
Life is just to short.

You'd be more than welcome Robert :)

I'll post a new thread about this when I get some in the boiler and start making it proper, don't want to hijack RumJohn excelent thread on Cachaca.

I have been following this thread for a couple of years now and visiting this bucket full of golden goodness ever since I found it at the local wholesalers. Finally brought it home on the weekend. It'll kick around the garage while I wait for ma big barrel to come free and then off we go !

Got my new shiny pot to run it through ... if I can still like a pirate I might as well dress like one too.

Ew Arr !

Thanks ED . I'm guessing you are making up a 23 litre wash ? How many kgs of GS to get that up to 1.080?

Hi there, the best numbers that I can offer are that 6 (rinsed out) cans of 907g Lyles GS,made up to 23 litres, gave an SG of 1.072.
I thought that high enough.
I hope that helps.

Robert.

@Mr. F Square. If its any help, I use 24 cans in a 90L wash.

I have always wanted to try making cachaca with Chelsea GS as it has a much better flavor than T & L. But cant buy it here. To be able to buy it in 5 gal buckets would be better than sex.
