Just put this on. Any ideas?
Hiya guys. Just put on
5l Lincoln molasses ( total sugars as sucrose 40%)
1kg granulated sugar
25l water
Half tin of bakers yeast.
Aiming for some kind of rum.
The molasses was only £6.99 from Cornwall farmer so I thought why not?!

If you have a refractometer or a hydrometer, what does it say. I think this might benefit from a bit more granulated

Hi mash. My hydrometer said it was 13%. I left it at that as I'm only using bakers yeast and didn't want to stress it

Ignore my comment then. Keep it at a steady 25c and it will finish ok. Molasses has plenty of nutrient and flavour.
You shouldn't be disappointed.

That sounds quite tasty!.
Myself, only having done an RJ Cachaca brew the one time am not the person to give advice about Rum, but other dedicated Rum drinkers here, (KerryW & Captain Cuds spring to mind) must have posted helpful stuff.
Try tapping something into the search box top right of this forum page, there is a whole bunch of stuff indexed, use the right search/keywords and enjoy unlocking it.
Have fun,
Robert.

All I do is setup my pothead and run that...you ask about "the spirit" run, what's your intentions???...are you thinking of running a strip first?? then a spirit??
As it's a molasses based wash and your after grog then I take it you'll want all the flavours to carry through??....what still do you run??

I have never established how much molasses tastes balanced.
Like Ice has mentioned, what still do you have?

Re: Just put this on. Any ideas?
Thanks guys. I only have a smartstill but always follow along the lines of mozr's and Aidan's guides.
Woke up this morning to the whole house honking of molasses. This is by far the smelliest wash I've done and can't stop laughing at the comments from my wife and kids about beards and me disappearing down into our harbour to commandeer one of the boats!
Anyway, back on track. I presumed it would need stripping and then a spirit run with it being in the smartstill
Thanks guys

When I started with my airstill all I did was sugar wash....For vodka.
Now with the 500 and my 2" copper pothead I run GS wash for grog. I've found a place where I can get molasses and what to try that next.
I found the GS wash gives a light vanilla rum
I'm sure some of the guys have run rum through the AS...fingers crossed

It will strip ok in an AS. when you spirit run collect in separate jars so you can evaluate separately. Only run molasses a couple of times and I think you will have lots of flavour to choose from.
