Treat the 2/3 section as your main column from the design point of view with the short section as an add in for when you want neutral. I wouldn't bother fitting any temp sensors in the short section.

In the longer section it is up to you where you place sensors but I find it convenient to have 1 main sensor (somewhere) in the head itself, and a supplementary sensor about 1/3 of the column length down from the head. Just for a bit of advanced warning of temp changes.

I use a 2 channel temp sensor that reads out both temperatures at the same time (or the differential between them) which I find convenient.

Where you put the sensor in the head is just a matter of convenience, but it helps if it is above the reflux return, so that it is only exposed to product vapour.

Ahh the "Joys" of camping :D roll on Aug. ;)

Just been catching up on it now, I think I'm going to have to slow everything down and use a lot less power, also by getting carried away buying shiney stuff from StillDragon ive switched from VM to CM and I think that's where my main problem lies, ever since I changed from my VM, the quality of my Neutral has gone down :-(

Getting carried away!! you've hit the nail there mate...it can be costly as well...I stopped at my torpedo, but where does that leave your SD column??

I'm also going to use a smaller boiler charge, last time I used the strip from 5 x 25lt wash's, so with that much potential alcohol to collect, it does play on your mind that it's going to be a long run and you can't afford to spend too long trying to compress heads at a couple of drip per second when you know that at some point in the same day you would like to finish the job.

Time is the boss when it comes down to it...my last spirit run went to the line on time when Mrs Ice is saying "dinners on the table"

Next time I'm going back to my home made LM/VM setup, I just need to make a few modifications so I can still use the SD product condensor and parrot.

All the best with sorting it all out. ;)

It is a valid point about the run times.

Pintoshine over on AD states that he does some runs that are 30 hours, at just 1 litre per hour and that is on a 4" column.

Its one of the reasons I advocate the smaller boiler for the packed column, to bring the run time down to a more reasonable period.

If I told the Mrs I was going to the garage & would be back in 30 hours, I don't think there would be much to come back to! :D
