A BIG YES on that, by giving it a vigorous stir you will stir more oxygen to help the ferment.

Not a vigorous stir. Use a balloon whisk and beat the beejeebers out of it.

Hi all first post here so here goes! My still is almost done and I decided to do a kale wash as the sacrificial run !
Being a silly boy I never took an SG at the beginning and thought it would take 10 or so days to finish however it started slow then boom!off it went . But after 5 days it stopped

So I thought the heat pad might be too hot and had killed it off . I pitched a bit more yeast, cooled it abit but nothing >:( so I gave it a good stair and still nothing.
Well thought I would now test SG and it's reading 0.990 ! Used 4kg sugar,100g of yeast and 100g of kale simmered down . And just wondered if I screwed up ?

That sounds like a fortuitous result to me
And big respect for going light on the sugar.
Sometimes less really is more.
Welcome!
Robert.

Hi Robbo,
My fermentations have been taking bloody ages lately despite each bin having two cylinder jackets, raised off the floor on a carpeted pallet and an aquarium heater set to 28oC. I regularly check both temps and gravity and the feckers are just damn lazy. The latest one I kicked off 10 days ago and they have slowed right down at 1010. Tomorrow eve it's going to get a damn good thrashing and I'll leave it till the weekend to see what happens. I would not mind, the unit it's in is centrally heated on a timer but I've just been given a spare fridge so I might use that to house them in and see how it goes.
Got to say I do love the Sugar Kale washes though. Makes a lovely spirit

Yeast gets the winter blues too - perhaps it just can't be arsed.

I think our hard London water helps.
I add nothing to the basic Kale
recipe, and they normally take 10 days
to finish another 2-3 to clear.
It does produce a nice clean Vodka
and cheap too.
