It does taste dry.
I was thinking about leaving it till maybe Wednesday.
See if it drops anymore but come whatever start it clearing and get it stripped ready
Going to go with 1kg of lentils next wash

Probably will be OK but when starting a new wash you should try to ensure pH is between 5.2 - 5.5 so that it will last until all the sugar has been consumed by the yeast.

Can it be stripped like this or should I leave it longer?

I aim for considerably clearer than that. Did you de-gas it completely before adding the finings?

I definitely wouldn't run it like that. It does look to ave a substantial amount of suspended material which would indicate it probably wasn't finished fermenting. At this stage all you can do is degas it and use another fining agent like Turbo Clear ;) also leave it out in the cold.

I have been studying this wash for a bit... I had wondered i there was anything else that might be added to make it more complete...

I found this article about pectin:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/28906 ... in-pectin/

and since beans and lentils have a very large pectin content i was wondering if the addition of Pectinase would assit the ferment in any manner...

just want to say thanks to you all. I've been lurking around here for a long time sucking up all of the info i could. gotta be the friendliest forum (on almost any topic) i have ever seen.

anyhoo.... I just kicked of a 1.5 galon tester of this recipe, but didn't have any lentils so i tried pinto beans instead. pitched the yeast 37 minutes ago and it's already trying to crawl out of it's cage! :o

thanks again to all of you for the great info!

Cheers!

Welcome YeastBeard! Great name! :-) I've tried that recipe with a great many dried beans, peas, and lentils. The yeast seems to like them all. I always have to add more nitrogen (DAP) but that is normal for most of my sugar based washes.

thanks guys! there is a story behind that name, but i'll fill in later in the proper forum. (probably about an hour and a half after my first spirit run with the air still i just borrowed.) :) i've been watching one of my neighbors for a couple of years on a 15 gallon keg converted to a kettle with a four foot stack, and another friend that has a used 50 gallon liquid nitrogen container with a 6 or 7 foot column. the reason for switching to the air still is we live in a town with no running water so running batches in the winter is impossible, and in the summer it is a pain in the butt to hook up all of the pumps etc. we usually run a batch or two a year using this gear. looking forward to following aidanmac's info to see what the thing (air still) can do. also i should say (if only to keep on topic) that the pinto beans are kicking! I am three hundred miles from the nearest hospital let alone a grocery store, so this recipe is fantastic! I didn't even worry about the citrus as if i had access to anything like that i would squeeze it into my mouth just to prevent scurvy. if you are reading this right now and wondering if you should try this concoction the answer is a resounding YES! DO IT! DO IT NOW!

yeastbeard,YOU become more interesting with each post, and excuse my saying, but nuttier than squirrel shit, hoping that you don't take offence.
Where tf are you to be in a town with no running water? Oz outback? In which case you may not understand the squirrel joke.
300 miles from hospital may be a clue there.
Whatever,I wish you well with the 'stilling, the Airstill can produce good product,it inspired me to make my own larger version, and I have NO regrets,it works.
I have running water, just, pumped. But the challenge of an air cooled still was just too great.
And yes,in my limited experiments,it seems that all pulses can produce a decent wash.
Robert.
