kale wash

Postby googe » Fri Jun 21, 2013 11:49 am

Hi all, since kale is the most nutrient rich food in the world I figured it would be good as a nutrient for our washes. So I put one down.

25L wash
100g kale, blended with water
5kg white sugar
90g bakers yeast

Its been down about a 5 days now and its still bubbling like crazy and the temp in my shed has been down to 4c over night. Looking forward to running it and seeing how clean it is.

Having read this thread I had a wander round the vegetable section in Morrison's - no kale. Do we call it something else in England?

I used to grow lots of Curly Kale.
A very good brassica, lovely cooked/fried in butter/pepper and if it's your taste, nutmeg.
The amount in your recipe doesn't sound much for flavour, but could be a very good yeast nutrient.
I would be interested in the outcome.
Do let us know how it turns out.

Robert.

One day I'll have the patience to figure out how to add location etc to what shows about me on this site.
For now,I am in Scotland;and we grow acres of it!

When I said, "...pretty sure it's not grown here" I meant the currently available batch in Tesco.

Kale is a standard crop in Ireland but usually grown in August/September and harvested in October. ;)

Traditionally it is used here at Halloween (All Hallows Eve) to make a dish known as Colcannon of which there are many variations. Personally I think it was just a way to make kids eat their greens for fear of demons that might come to get you if you left any on your plate :D

Can't wait to see the results from your adventure. ;D

Ran a small test batch today, no more tpw for me now came out very nice, shits all over tpw low wines run I get through this still. just had a taste at 40% and there's no kale flavor what so.ever, was worried about that. This would be as good as you could get if it was put through more.plates. he next wash I just through sugar in the Lees with warm water, no.yeast and it's been bubbling like crazy for the past week. Happy.

I'm glad it worked for you, quite a brave thing to try.
I guess if the second wash slows down you just throw more Kale in?
