Storing backset

Hi All,
think I read something (can’t find it though) that said you could save and freeze backset to use at a later date. I was wondering if you could freeze it in old plastic milk bottles and how long can you leave it before you use it or if it’s even worth doing.
Cheers Goog

You sure can freeze stuff in milk bottles - I use them all the time (for summat else). leave 50mm gap at the top and leave the lids loose.

I would say it easily good for 6 months probably longer. I know it's not relevant, but I have frozen Grape pulp for 3 years in trials and it then made a superb wine.

I have frozen successfully frozen all sorts of things including yeast. The freezer is a very under-utilised/misunderstood piece of equipment.. IMO.

Is it worth it? That's as simple as do you want to run with back set or not. I am sure the freezing will be successful

Thanks Mash,
I am stripping my cornflakes wash in the morning and would like to save some backset for the next wash but have to do a kale wash first (need to get another fermenter). Would l be better off saving the strip run or spirit run backset?

I would say the strip - but I am guessing.

Ice will know.

If you’re using a pot still and want to use the backseat for flavour then use the one from the strip. The spirit backseat will have already given its flavour twice.

I store mine in a DJ when its cooled and cork it.
Always use it within a week or so. Seems to be ok.

Makes sense, I will keep some from the stripping run as want to try adding it to my next cornflakes. Thanks for the help guys.
