Triple Distilled vs Turbo Classic

Looking for a little more advise

I've not been doing this for long so have only used sugar washed in a T500

I was advised that for clear spirits I am better off using the SS Triple distil and for dark spirits the classic Turbo

The difference I have seen as far as out put goes is the classic turbo can produce a higher ABV wash and do it 2-3 days less than the triple distil

What are your experiences/recommendations

I do not understand why you would want different neutral washes for dark and clear spirits? If you are making a neutral then I would have thought that it should be as neutral as possible for both types of spirits and then let the essences add the flavour, or am I missing something?.

I have not used either of them, too expensive for my tastes.

As I said I am a newbie, I bought the whole T500 as a kit which came with all the required items including 2 x classic turbo and 2 x triple distilled and was told buy the guy in the shop that the classic was better suited to dark spirits and the triple to light ones.

To paint you the picture I quit smoking 5 months ago and wanted something else to keep me occupied and spend my savings on and this has always interested me but to be clear I have until now not made wine or beer - as I said I'm a newbie and greatly welcome advice and tips that's why I joined the forum to get help from you experts.

What would you guys recommend instead of the turbo yeast, what nutrients?

Also is the turbo carbon worth using?

IMHO you are better off using neither of them. Most here are not a fan of turbo yeasts. Save your money for something useful.

but theres a few that uses alcotec vodka star turbo yeast (im one of them)
and if i recall, i think aidanmac said its not like a turbo although it is

I have also used the vodka star and can't say there was any difference between it and the ss triple distilled

I wouldn't call Vodka Star a turbo but given a low temp ferment it does produce a nice clear wash without any carbon or finings.

Baker's yeast is a good, cheap all rounder. It will work with any type of wash or mash.

I don't understand the logic with Turbo Kits. The kit consists of carbon, used to filter out the cappy taste of what the included Turbo Yeast creates.

If you want to quote me at least do it properly. I did not say "it's not like a turbo", I said Vodka Star is NOT a turbo yeast, this is because of a difference in the nutrients and yeast package compared to actual turbo yeast packs. Plus, Vodka Star does not need activated carbon in the wash to try clean it up and make it less toxic

Anyway, I only use bakers years these days.

Aiden, do you have trouble getting a wash with baker's yeast to clear? I have been having a LOT of trouble getting the washes to clear lately. I am wondering if I have picked up some lovely infection in the shop or if it is the inclusion of baker's yeast.

I've not had any trouble with clearing but I don't go for crystal clear wash going into my 50l. If it was for my Airstill I'd want it crystal so I'd use Sparkolloid and the wash will come up 'sparkling'

When my wash is finished I carefully rack off to a clean fermenter, beat the gas out of it with a stick blender making sure not to introduce any air into the wash, then leave it for 2-3 days and it's good to strip

I also reuse the yeast cake in the next wash

Beat the gas out of it several times, added sparkleoid, added gelatine finings, waited a week or more. It still looks like milk. Strange washes these!
