Each to their own. I found they fall apart well. Brews mats imo are best value as they should last forever.

Just put my hydrometer in the barrel and what started off at 12% is now on one % lower!
Looks like i may have my first failed ferment guys.
Its been on a week now so shall i just tip it?

12% are you reading this on a hydrometer or refractometer. Beginning to think either this hasn't started properly or you are measuring something else

Re pitch yeast. Whisk some air in. Warm it up (30c max)

Thank you. I thrashed it to hell with a whisk on my electric dril so it was nice and frothy and have added 6 tablespoons of yeast so fingers crossed

If you ensure that it is warm enough, you should now be sorted.

@Corp*****: I read your post of a few days ago and I am not sure where you started or where your going to finish up. But if its not too late, lets see if we cant retrieve this wash and get it to completion.

The 12% down to 11%. I would assume you are reading the potential alcohol as opposed to the specific gravity. If this is the case then things are going in the right direction, even if slowly. Again, I am going to assume, you started out with a specific gravity of 1.090. Read the 12%/1.090 mark. If none of this is making sense, make sure you are using a specific gravity hydrometer rather than a proof and tralles alcometer.

Make sure you have a decent selection of hydrometers. Keep some spares on hand. And a floating dairy thermometer.

Your wash: If you only dissolved white sugar in the wash, it will have difficulty taking off as there is no nutrition in white sugar. All kinds of info is on this site re. nutrition. But the yeast do need something to feed on at the beginning.
