Trying to build a Keg Pot still and getting frustrated.

Postby DullahanBrewing » Wed Apr 17, 2013 10:49 pm

Ok so i have a couple of posts up here and on other sites and responses have been great. Since i am new to this site here i am lost as to what is available locally in UK and Ireland.

I have two kegs coming soon, i want to turn one into a still. I want to have a pot still initially but also want the capability to run reflux at a later stage. Trouble is any sources seem to be USA or Australia based. As such its hard to know what would suit best.

I cannot manufacture anything myself so soldering and welding are out completely. I think at least one of the kegs coming is a sanke that i can use a 2 inch clamp on if that will work?

I live in the arse end of nowhere so running to a local supplier is also out. I may be able to get a fella to make up a setup but failing that what could i buy that will run a pot and later a reflux ? If i have to get a solely pot setup to keep costs down thats ok too.

I just want something ready to go if getting one made does not work out.

Fermentation side of things is sorted as i am a home beer brewer since start of 2013 and i am looking to expand into stilling. Because of where i live i seem to be running into nothing but blocks at the moment and tbh my patience is running thin :'(

Is there a car exhaust specialist anywhere near? Those guys tend to be very good at fabricating whatever you want in stainless steel.

Unfortunately not John. Even though i live in countryside only 8 miles from nearest town there is nothing around here to help and to be homest they are a nosey lot, ask too many questions. There is not even so much as a proper builders merchants anymore. :-[

Hi DullahanBrewing
If you dont find or cant build what you are after.
I have a 30" column 2" copper pot head with a condensor and a tri clamp with silicon seal I dont use, and a free 50l beer keg if needed. Im happy to post the column. Norm

Cheers Normski i will let you know. Truth be told my biggest issue besides waiting on the kegs to arrive is i have nobody locally that can convert one to electric for me without cutting the top. Including you now i actually have 3 different sources for a copper still setup but nobody to sort the keg out :(

You can add connections to a stainless keg without welding using a essex flange.

Thanks YHB i am waiting on someone to get back to me about whether they can do that for me. Otherwise i will have to forget about using my beer kegs and i willhave to get a suitable boiler shipped to me, bloody expensive that.

You are talking about less than a couple of hours with a hand drill and a file.
