Hops infused gin

Whilst on holiday in Majorca this year I was eating at this restaurant https://www.brutrestaurante.com/ and had the best meal of my life. 10 course taster menu that was made by some crazy genius Argentinian chef. They made everything themselves, brewed their own beer, made wine, even roasted their own coffee beans. Anyway, at the end of the meal I tried a gin they had infused with hops. It had quite a bitter taste, but was really refreshing and delicious and had a lovely golden colour We ended up having a lock in with the chefs and a couple of their friends and got to try all his alcoholic creations (his capers liqueur was a bit weird!) while I chatted to him about my own gin making escapades and I promised him I would return next year with a bottle for him.

Anyway, I resolved to try and make my own hops infused gin so I got in touch with them and got the recipe. 10g of citra hops for 1 litre of gin, shaken and left for no longer than a week.

Picked up the hops a couple of days ago, just finished a wash and will make some next week!

I'll let you know how it goes.

I have heard rumours of this before. I fancy trying it.

When brewing all grain beer this is called 'dry hopping'.

10g per litre saves a lot of experiments.

Hops are messy buggers. Don't know if you have pellets or leaf, but they need to be in a bag / net / mesh tube. The balance between letting the flavour out, but keeping the crap in can be tough.

They are pellets, thanks for the tip, I've got a steel mesh tea infuser thing that I could use.

There is a vapour infusion thread, but is there a recipe thread for post distillation infusion? For making things like this and fruit liqueur's ? If not, there should be! :)

Unless I am missing something, post distillation infusion is simply "steeping".
Numerous references in this topic and probably others.
Sloe Gin etc,
When we know the forum has a future, and get an office person, maybe they will all be collated into a single thread. :)

Something else I have really been pleased with is a stainless steel coffee filter/dripper.

Less than £5 from China.

First used on JD bbq chips, but I think its gonna be handy for hops too.

Forgot to bag the hops. Oops! Will just have to run through a cheese cloth a couple of times. Ready in 5 days.

No, not yet, will leave it before trying. The recipe said to leave the hops in for 3-5 days, so I'll try a snifter in a few days. This morning it's turned into a lovely colour.

Made some of this a while ago cant find it in
my recipe book. will look in the experiments book.
Can remember only putting about 3g of Citra Hops
in and the taste was quite strong. They were pelet
and I crushed them.

I strained it and bottled it this evening after three days of steeping. The colour is lovely and golden and the flavour is nice - not too overpowering. I'd go as far as to say it's a very nice gin and one I will be making again.

But... the f*cking thing louched when I added ice and tonic. **bangs head against wall**

I'm going to have to reduce my juniper as this must be the issue. I used to use 12g for 1.5L of neutral and had no problems, it's only since I bumped it up to 19g that this has started happening. I'll gradually reduce it until it stops happening.

19g per liter is imo a bit high, but I did dislike louching.

You might also find juniper berries vary. Some much richer in oil than others.
