One of the first questions to ask yourself is what you wish to produce,a neutral or a flavoured product.

At the beginning am after a neutral product , them maybe a bit experimenting with some further additions to the T500.

Oh and btw Don't be put off by some posts about flavourings a good neutral with some essences eg SS blue jewel gin makes some very acceptable hooch
And Then after that you can get into some really good stuff

Greetings all..

Just starting out on my journey - 'er indoors gave me an AirStill for Christmas, and two batches in, I'm beginning to work out it needs a bit more care and attention than the instructions lead you to believe!

Thank heavens for places like this - already learnt a lot about double-distilling and proper filtration.

Welcome Hampk! Also check the Recipes section for alternatives to the store bought essences. You can can do far better than them as well!

Hereabouts you will learn almost all that you need to know.
Only almost because the rest of us are still learning too!(no Pun intended)
However,with everyone sharing,knowledge spreads fast,and there are a number of years of accumulated knowledge here already,enough for you to piggy-back to some great tasting product straight away.

Whoops! I posted elsewhere first.

I'm Phill from the beautiful rolling countryside of Derbyshire in the UK. I have been brewing beers and fermenting wines since the age of about 15 and distilling since last July.

I started with an AirStill and the supplied turbo yeast, carbon, clear but wasn't completely satisfied with the results so moved on to trying branflake (currently ageing on toasted charred birch); blackcurrant brandy (ageing on toasted cherry and plum); apple brandy (which I had a bit of a mishap with); about 8 batches of birdwatchers/tpw (flavoured with essences/ home-made infusions).

I currently have 44l of my first rum wash (made with 5l of black treacle and 5l of feed molasses) clearing which is to be my inaugural run on my 32l stock-pot still I've built.

Welcome, sounds like you already know what your doing, how's the rum going? I was just looking a black treacle in the shop today, I've also been looking around for some feed molasses, which one did you use? I'd be interested to hear how it's going

I used NAF molasses http://www.viovet.co.uk/NAF_Molasses_for_Horses/c6409/?sct_t=1424435999&sct_q=molasses&sct_r=1. It cost around 12 quid with p&p but I'm sure I could get it cheaper from a tack shop if I put my mind to it. The black treacle was also around the 12 quid mark from a catering wholesaler.

I've just (this morning) done my sac cleaning run on my new still so I'm hoping to do my 1st stripping run on my rum later on. The wash smells and tastes quite good so I'm hoping for good things from it.

Hi guys new on here and still brewing. im in the process of buying a air still starter kit from love brewing my tipple is mainly malt whiskys buy would like a cupboard full of other spirits at the right price .i love watching moonshire on tv hence the username
