Computers a love.... hate relationship ?
Love them or hate them ? most folks use them at some time or other. We would not be on here "talking" together without them. I wouldn't have known where to begin about mixing a wash or running a still let alone build one if not for a pc.
I hate Window OS..there I've said it & don't care
...swmbo has win 8 on hers, it does my head in
I did have a flirt with Ubuntu a year or so back and was really getting into it, I run it as a duel boot along side Win 7 on my laptop. Don't go knocking a glass of vodka & coke over a pc, it don't like it at all
After the accident I went to buy a new pc, Win 8 had just been releashed. Couldn't find a machine with Win 7 on at all, I finally hunted one down. While on holiday the swmbo bought a Samsung Note 10.1, so now I've got her old pc as a spare.
I don't want to do a duel boot again on my pc, so yesterday I tried to download onto a usb flash drive the Ubuntu OS starting Here
When I hit the download button in the screenshot, up comes the box but it won't download at all. It should ask where you want it to go...nothing, zilch, nadda, and when I do hit "save file"...nowt.

So I'm at a dead end at the moment...what I would like to do is format the spare pc and load a full Ubuntu OS onto it....so any ideas guys????

Have you checked out http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
If you download and burn it to a DVD you can run it from the DVD to try before installing.

Yes mate..I used that link last time to download straight to the hard drive. Neither of the 2 laptops have internal cd/dvd drives, that's why I was hoping to use my flash. Short of buying an external dvd drive I'm stumped .

Been there, Done that
I got soooooo frustrated with PCs, Windows and especially Microsoft that I dumped the lot. I got sick of being spammed to death every single day and having to constantly, on a daily basis, scan for Viruses, Worms, Trojans, Fried Eggs, etc., etc..Changed over to Mac and peace came into my world. Some say that Apple are a shower of
B#*t¥r@s who dictate what you can or cannot do. I'm not an Apple protector but Mac can do everything a PC can do, better, faster, and then Mac can do things no PC could ever hope to do and I don't have to deal with Viruses, Trojans, Worms or any other shit like that, nor do I get spammed.
Whether you love it or loathe it the advantages of Mac over PC are legion and undeniable
the only negative is the cost
.... there's always something

Hell if IF wants to he can PM me an address and I'll post a burned DVD and at the same time suggest Kubuntu which has the more windows looking KDE front end if he wanted......
Or linux mint or even Gentoo if he wants to compile it from source.......
And yes, I've been using various linux distros for the last 10 years......
@aidanmac.....I believe that OSX is BSD based anyway, which is just a different unix-like OS and my only gripe is that "they" dont just want to dictate the software a la microsoft but the hardware too....... but thats much harder to do now it runs on commodity chips and not the old bespoke ones like it used to so now why bother with tbeir very pretty but over priced hardware if its installable on a standard chassis........
Hey ho!

No mate, just a fairness and freedom person. I don't dispute that apple make some good quality, sturdy and well designed hardware, but all the crap about only allowing stuff that's been approved by them onto that hardware, then when somebody finds a way of "jail breaking" the hardware, then try and make it so that jail broken hardware is "bricked" at the next update, it to me, corporate dictatorship at the extreme.
