It is not the glass that is important (though glass is safe with high proof alcohol while many plastics and other materials are not as they leach out things you don't want to be drinking). It is the open that is important (covered with cheese cloth, paper towels etc). The reason is that is allows volatile components to evaporate. You loose some alcohol too but get a better product as a result.

Wow, thx for that..... So much to learn on my new pleasure venture..

Try to find about 12/18 x 500mm Kilner jars, car boots, free add papers, or just nick them off the Swmbo.... don't get caught.

They sometimes come up at Wilko/Lakeland at sale times.

I use the 1lt Kilners because once I migrated to a 50Lt boiler I found the larger jars better as I collect my spirits in 750ml lots other than immediately around the cut points where I just collect smaller amounts in the same size jars.

For a 40lt spirit run with the low wines at 40% I use a DJ to collect the first 3lt as heads, then I have 24 X 1lt Kilners to collect everything else. the end of the Heads usually takes 2 jars then 16 more for the Hearts and early Tails.

As you're using a 50lt boiler too you might find you need more jars if you use 500ml ones.

Not sure of the jar size in ml yet as the product is sold by weight but they're over 500ml, maybe 600ml, something I noticed the other day is they are numbered on the bottom, I'm going to make a collection and get all the numbers, my highest so far is 27, it's one sure way to make sure your cuts never get mixed up when a label fall off or rubs off

Yeah OCD it is, but if I'm buying the molasses anyway, might as well make use of the jars, in the correct order of course :-)

Do you get odd looks in H&B sorting through the jars to get the number you want?
