Frank,it's good to have an old name and face back.
Even if it is intermittently.
It was your whisky posts that sent me off on a malt journey of my own last year,to be repeated this year.
There is another old member of this site that I hope finishes his vacation soon and finds some time to return and share his wisdom and thoughts.
I'm not too optimistic,but wink,wink,nudge,nudge,elbow,elbow,say no more about it.

Hi all,
I'm normally an AG brewer who frequents various beer brewing sites as BarnsleyBrewer..
I'm now tempted to try my hand at another skill regarding alcohol production for home use!

Not got one yet, looking around and trying to get an idea how much v quality and ease of use for a complete beginner.
Are some of these homemade spirits good quality? Forgive the questions but I know nothing about distillation as I normally brew ale on my 15 gallon HERMS around once a month.

BB..take your time read up and you'll make up your own mind....I followed the the...Airstill...followed by the T500....now I'm up to a 50 lts S/S milkcan with my own built column.

If I'd know back then what I know now I would have built my own boiler/still....as an AG brewer you'll have loads of gear that you maybe able to convert. don't rush into anything just yet mate.

Once you get into it...you'll be turning out better than what you buy.

@BB,+1 with what Ice said there,take some time,maybe your first still should be a first build.
Do lots of reading on this site and others.
Read until your eyes feel like they are bleeding.
A lot of people have poured their time into sharing stuff here,and it is all worth reading.Some is shite,but you don't usually find Gold on a sandy beach,so put your work in online.
You could easily produce high quality spirit.
You are halfway there already.

StillDragon supplies modular parts if you want something between a full self build and a "still in a box". People seem pretty happy with their design and quality. And if you want to go the techie route, iStill has a nice line of fully automated stills. The more you search around, the more options you will find!

You're right Chuck, but you can't really beat the raw excitement of a 'seat-of-your-pants', self-built still running and producing your very own spirits. I'd venture the opinion that any reasonably experienced all grain brewer probably already possesses the necessary skills to build a top quality pot or reflux still.

I know all about AG and running my 15 gallon HERMS but nothing about the finer art of alcohol production..
I'm here to learn.....
