My first triple distill
Hi all,
Figured I might share my latest experimentation with my T500. Today, I finally finished my first Triple Distilled Batch. Soooo....
What I did:
4 x 25L batches of a cornflake based mash. Fermented slowly till 14% (+/-).
Distilled each batch and got roughly 3.3L at 95%. 13.2L total
2 x 20L batches, brought down to roughly 30%.
Distilled each batch to 6L at 95%, total 12L
Diluted again to 30% and distilled a third time.
Was left with 10.8L at 95%.
Finally diluted to 50% and had 20.2 L of it
My Verdict:
WOW !! I liked how the stuff tasted on a single distill using a turbo yeast but this is soooo...... different !! It literally has NO TASTE and almost no smell. Not even an alcohol smell. This is very good tasting.
CONCLUSION:
It is by far better to distill more than once and go for a better quality product rather than volume. If I simple single distilled, and went with 4 washes, I would be left with 25.2 L rather than 20.2 L. So, over all, I sacrificed 5L of liquor for SIGNIFICANTLY better tasting stuff.
I will be doing this again for myself, but if I'
m making stuff for my mates, they can have the single distilled stuff and not care !

Re: My first triple distill
Only just got around to reading this post.
I do DD now, and have done for the last year or so, and found the taste to be loads better.
Last weekend was our anniversary and we went away for the Fri & Sat, stayed in a hotel, around the coner is a Polish restaurant that we've been to before.
Now they have loads of different vodka's and we had some triple..
I asked the price of a bottle to take home, worked out way too much, but it got me thinking.
If DD makes a far better vodka, than maybe a go at triple is on the books for me.
Keep up the good work cmbtsmrf.

Re: My first triple distill
It may be a little more work, but it doesn't cost much to find out.
Triple distilling with a pot still is not so new, with a reflux still, certainly news to me.
Interesting that it makes such a difference.
Robert.

Re: My first triple distill
Hi, I wanted to share my results. I have tried the triple yeast which was good and i also tried carbon filter, not bad result. Now i tried a few different wine/champagne yeast i had left from wine making, and after reading this, i tried the multiple distilling. i did a single distill then add water to 50% strength basically an equal amount of water added, 2nd run is double distill, didn't taste much improved, then add equal water again to get back to 50% and i find when you do the 3rd distill it taste and smell much better. its quite a lot of improvement much better than triple yeast and carbon filter. i find a triple distill is an excellent result, and far better than i expected, really smooth and no ethanol smells.i thought it was a really big improvement! its now my benchmark. i just received my copper netting, so I'm going to follow the guide in the SPP thread and repack with copper wire in the reflux rather than the ceramic, to see if i can get this kind of result with 1 or 2 distills rather then 3.

Welcome John Doe...triple just takes that little longer to get the end results that you want.

Re: My first triple distill
For vodka I usually double distill with pothead then do a third on the reflux plus a quick filter
Tastes of bugger all to me but very smooth and my vodka drinking friends love it
Now where that peaty malt of mine

Re: My first triple distill
Hi,
Thanks for the welcome Icefever and Easydrinker.
I found it easy to move over from wine making using a t500. As I had some country wine needed stripping, was past its best and i just got the cooper head now too. So i tried a triple method and used the copper alembic head for first strip then 2 runs with reflux. its good the copper is quicker to strip. i also tried some sugar wash/dark muscavado with alembic copper its very tasty on a single or double run but I still need to try the copper netting in the reflux for gin, maybe this week if i get time. See how well it does against the triple distill. Also interesting that the industry here in the UK has a few small producers now doing 5 distills for gin and vodka. i tasted a few at shows this year and smoothness is the way to go.
