I know this is an old post but thought I would put this here for noobies reading and learning. The easiest way I have found to remove labels off old wine or spirits bottles is to fill it with very hot water, wait 30 seconds and then just peel the labels off. If you have it hot enough and do it slow enough all the glue peals off with the labels as well
Cheers Goog

Put mine in the dishwasher upright and peel them off whilst full of the still hot liquid. If that doesn't work scrape with knife and sticky stuff remover.

Plastic labels come off good like this.
Any oil / paraffin / Wd40 /cooking oil will remove the glue residue.

Paper labels soak off, and are tidied up with a ss scrubby.

You have to be a label detective :D
