Hi All,
I was thinking of having a go at making Gin and was wondering if I let my Botanicals soak in the spirit for couple of days and then just tip the whole lot into the airstill, 1. Would it work this way.? 2.would I run the risk of scorching and ruining the gin. Guess what I am really asking is do I need to use a basket/sputnik to make Gin.
Cheers Goog

Nay, just strain it through a sieve, before stilling.
I doubt that is needed, but it works for me.
Robert.
Oh, and maybe allow them to soak for a week or so with this method.

A two day soak is overkill if you're going to run it with the botanicals in the still. A few hours is more than enough.
I make all my gin this way, as well as absinthe, akvavit and various herbal liqueurs. Never had a problem with scorching. I do plan on trying out a sputnik one day, but I just haven't got around to it.

That will work.
IME the spunik gets a cleaner higher flavour and is scalable. Soaking isn't, so you will need different recipes for different volumes.
The sputnik is easy enough to make - give it a go.
The important thing is make some gin! You will be amazed at the various flavours you can do & fun you can have.

thanks for the replys, I am hoping to run a kale wash this weekend and then plan to have a play at turning it into Gin. Going to start with a nice easy receipt (Odins Gin) and see how I go. Will let you know how I get on when its all done.
cheers

Why not make a sputnik while the kale is finishing off. Odins is good. But the sputty will impress you. And is soooooo easy & quick.

I will be honest, I finally made a Sputnick, a year or so ago.
I think that I have yet to use it, the workarounds seem so much simpler.
I confess to being a Luddite, not for the first time.
But hey, whatever floats your boat.
Robert.

@Mash I will see if I can make a sputnik when I get the parts together so may have to find a good recipe when I get it sorted. Now that Wormwood has comfirmed that it should not scorch I am going to give the Odins one a go this weekend as I have tasted it and am wanting to see if I can make the same.
Cheers thanks for your input guys

TBH I am unadventurous, and stick with stuff that I like.
I only want a basic Gin, no frills.
No hint of Samphire and Parma violets, and all the other subtle shite.
Odin's works for me.
Just Sayin'.
