Plastic Storage Crates as Fermenters

Found a place in Oldham selling them cheaper and cheaper postage, I would probably collect from there

I use a 60 litre one for double batch ferments, as mentioned no airlock needed just don't screw the lid tight. The down side is its super heavy when full and regular racking canes are not long enough.

Submersible Whale 12v caravan pump on the end on 2m 1/2 inch clear hose. Brilliant. And not expensive.

Works on a wall slug or a battery.

Attach to a cane to drive the end about for accurate racking.

I have attached the pump, hose and the 12v cord to an aluminum rod, with 3 cable ties. This way I can put the pump anywhere I want and slide the pump up and down the rod to regulate depth.

A wash off and spray in alc sterilizes it. Remove 3 cable for a full strip deep clean. Been using it for YEARS. Brilliant.

Aluminium would have to be in a wash for a LONG,LONG time to have any appreciable reaction, No?
Your Ma, and My Ma grew up thinking Aly was the best material ever for saucepans.
Scrub it shiney clean each time and it may indeed hasten "oldtimers" ,but I believe it is considered to be mostly safe.

I will add copper is reactive in a wash too, so you REALLY don't want that unless you are using it to remedy a hydrogen sulphide issue.

The aluminium rod isn't mandatory. Anything smooth & inert will do. I settled on something skinny to get thought the neck of a 54l carboy. But for fermenters you could equally use a boom handle.

Another way could be to use the inline pump but this does suffer from airlocks due to the gas released.
