Converting a T500 for a large botanical basket

Postby BlackMountains » Sun Feb 11, 2018 9:02 am

Hi has anyone built a column to go in top of the Alembic copper dome and reconnecting the condenser on the top . I want to mesh this at the bottom and use it as a gin basket

I have a still spirits botanical basket, but it’s quite small

I have the plumbing ability and access to 2” copper pipe and fittings just curious on the length I can make it .

Thanks

I'm currently planning on trying this to make a reflux column, using 2" tri clamp fittings, they haven't arrived yet so can't say if it works or not.

They look perfect, thanks , are you happy with the 1 1/2fitting I assume it’s bsp and will match the dome fitting etc .

The column only has one clamp by the look of it so will need another.

Thanks again

From reading around the fitting on the copper condenser is 1.5" bsp so should fit, some of the Chinese fittings are NPT so watch out for that.
I didn't list all the parts I ordered, so you will need appropriate gaskets and clamps, and possibly some kind of silicone washer to go in the condenser head to marry up when you screw the tri clamp fitting.

Great thanks for the update, ive gone ahead and ordered the kit and some spare gaskets and tri clamps .
I'm a heating engineer by trade so will be able to put this together some how lol .

this should give me a nice botanical basket. i have a still spirits gins basket so hopefully the threads will match the adaptor piece as that will give me a mesh base to stop the botanical falling through .

next up is a bubble plate set up , if you know of a chinese supplier

thanks for the help

Pipe and fittings arrived yesterday, both fittings screw to each part of the condenser ,I might wrap some Teflon tape to make sure there sealed. the gasket is quite hard compared to the silicone ones I already have from still dragon, PTFE, so should be ok.

I'm yet to do any kind of column stilling, only just upgraded from the airstill, so someone else can hopefully help you with the bubble plates :)

;D so did I (sight glass), my plan is 2x2" tubes (packed with SS scrubbies), sight glass, 2" Dephlegmator , condenser. I'ts all a bit mcgyver but hopefully I'll get something out of it.

forgot to mention a power controller, think this is a must on the T500 for spirit runs.

cheers

This is one I picked up . Using it today and it’s doing the job, running the ss Alembic still at half power and so far so good

Can confirm that the power controller that I posted above works a treat . Tamed the rush in the T500 no problem
