Welcome! As you said, it's a bit of both - plus convenience - some don't live near a homebrew supplier and everything in the wash is easy to get from the supermarket.
I also recommend it as part of the learning process because a Turbo is deliberately pitched by the manufacturers as being a big secret and almost a 'black box' approach, they tell you that you have to do this this and this or it won't work, whereas if you do a simple tomato wash you can get a feel for the process and what the fermentation needs, then you can go about experimenting.
It's not the best recipe you will find, you can get better yields and flavours from all sorts of others, but you have to go a long way to find one as simple both to get the ingredients for and to get up and running.
