Thanks for pointing that out. I had that in mind but forgot to write it down. The timers that I had looked at could all handle 400+ watts.

Well my first TPW did eventually ferment out to 0.990 which did yield 13% it took just over 2 weeks.

It may sound strange but wash smelt a little like cider ? Have done the stripping run and will be doing the spirit run tomorrow night, hoping for a nice clean spirit

The cider smell/taste is from the white sugar. A bit of warmth will likely make it ferment faster. More nutrients might too.

Hi everyone newbie to the forum here. Been using the Turbo yeast / Charcoal upto now, but fascinated by the discussion.

First off - is the use of TPW for cost saving or for quality - it looks like it a bit of both.

I experimented with a 4 litre wash just using tomato puree with some bottom of bucket yeast from a previous wash as I didn't have any epsom salts. It came out OK - the flavour is hard to describe - a bit of vanilla. It reminds me of some wine that I put through that had a very characteristic taste - it was smooth but was more rounded and full that I think a base should be.

I see another post on a Yeast Bomb - what's the thoughts on advantages or otherwise with TPW? Or is a yeast bomb a good thing to use with a TPW?

Incidentley the worst wine I every made was elderflower - it was unbalanced sweet and bitter. However after a spin through the still it was a perfect Eau de Vie - I am tempted to try and make some more vile wine as it was so good.

Welcome! As you said, it's a bit of both - plus convenience - some don't live near a homebrew supplier and everything in the wash is easy to get from the supermarket.

I also recommend it as part of the learning process because a Turbo is deliberately pitched by the manufacturers as being a big secret and almost a 'black box' approach, they tell you that you have to do this this and this or it won't work, whereas if you do a simple tomato wash you can get a feel for the process and what the fermentation needs, then you can go about experimenting.

It's not the best recipe you will find, you can get better yields and flavours from all sorts of others, but you have to go a long way to find one as simple both to get the ingredients for and to get up and running.

Last night saw me run my first TPW spirit run and first impressions are great.....

50ml - foreshot (kept for domestic cleaning purposes)
250ml - heads (put aside with other head savings ready for heads run)
1200ml - hearts (the last 100ml was 60% left over night no smells in the morning)
500ml - tails (% dropped very quickly on each 100ml test)

The hearts left over night in open top glass jar and smell this morning was good, too early to taste test but will try a bit tonight before I water down and filter at the weekend.

So all in all my first TPW has been a great success, thanks to everyone for their help / advice and support along the way......if I keep going like this I may have to invest in a T500 as I need to place an order with wineworks today it will be hard not to click add to basket next to the T500 ........

Thats a great result Knobby, almost unbelievable to me....nice one...please keep the posts going re results and for now please keep the 'hearts' for a month or two before quaffing then, put simply, you may have a win....

OK so I know it's been a quite a while since knobby posted on this...I hope all was and indeed is well......(please update us if you know otherwise)

After having done numerous SS turbo suger washes, I have just put on my own first TPW as in knobbys first post recipe below!


Recipe

5kilo sugar (normal)
280g tomatoe purée
Juice of 1 lemon
75g allisons dried yeast
21ltrs water

It's only been on a couple of hrs & is already bubbling like my missus did when i forgot her birthday!

Question I have is .......Should I have added 21 ltrs of water to top up to 25ltrs?

or after adding the ingredients should have topped up to 21 ltrs?

I went for the 25 ltrs in order to make the 5 strip runs but please advise or correct me if i am wrong??

please bare in mind I'm still on the air still & learning my trade!

(was going to get a T500 or import a reflux/combie pot till i realised there's way much to learn before jumping ahead of yourself...every day is a school day!)

I would say you got it about right if your SG was about 1.080, after racking off the sediment you should be left with just the right amount.To work out the calculation of a wash try this site. http://www.aussiedistiller.com.au/xcalcs.html

Depending on your water quality you may run into a problem with TPW if the pH takes a dive because of the acid content. This is not a problem in areas with limescale in the water.

I recently had problems with this wash and it turned out that this recipe is just not suitable for my water type because of too much acid from the tomato paste and the lemon juice. If you do encounter any problems give me a shout.

However, I hope it works for you as it is a good recipe under the right conditions.
