Hi all, i tried this potato recipe, and i got a bit busy and it ended up naturally clearing after it sat for a couple months. I then found some free time over xmas to do some runs, and finally run it through a pot still twice and i think it taste like a nice vodka. i am no expert and more into gin and rum, but I fancied something else, the initial taste is very much what a nice smooth vodka taste like, so i like it so much i will do a few more.

Just wanted to add, i still use airlocks so there is no issue if they sit for a month or 2 longer when i get busy.

I just have to say that I'm pleased your lack of time gave you a result.
My understanding of potato washes is the work/mess factor is a pain.
The fact that you then had to leave it,and so it settled naturally seems to have worked in your favour.
Excellent.
Am I right in assuming you used this as a sugar-head recipe, some potato, more sugar?
Robert.

Yeah you are right i followed the same recipe which is 5.5kg of potato ( as i had some getting old, so i used all i had rather than 5kg) and 4.5 kg of sugar. never ever tried dextrose. i also put carbon in it, not fond of it when it comes to cleaning though. plus it does froth a lot so you get a grey sludge oozing out for a couple days. i tend to put it in a walk in shower and close door, contain the beast!

I'd love to give this a try. The thought of the potential mess is a little off putting though....
Plus, would I expect to get decent results out of an airstill.
Final point Easydrinker, why are you opposed to using the turbo carbon?

Simply for the mess of having semi-liquid carbon to dispose of.
I'm on a septic tank, and don't even feed it coffee grounds.
That and the fact that carbon in the wash has seemed excessive to me for almost forever.
If I want to use carbon,I will filter at the end of the process.
Robert.

Fair enough, makes sense. I thought there was something more sinister :-)
Thinking more about making this, I've decided when I give it a go (after my current sugar wash has finished) I'll top up to 20 litres and after the krausen has died down I can add the extra 5. This should minimise the risk of over flow.
Looking forward to trying something different.

Here here - tried one years ago OMG what an awful thing to get clear. After some wrestling it did make some proper loopy juice though.

I wish you well with it,and hope you keep us informed.
Just spotted the profile update, forgive my Geo-graghical ignorance, does this make you a Zeelander?
I have a sister just moved to that region.
Robert.
Edit: Just seen another post of yours elsewhere, and fairly certain that Lloyd's chemists are not in Holland,I am missing something here....

Hi Robert, South Holland is a bit of a smoke screen really and as Mashy quaintly put it I'll be a yellow belly in another 120 years time...

Pray you don't get an infection in that potato wash. There is no worse smell that I know of.
