If the barrels were charred it could be some of the charcoal. You should be able to filter that out with with cotton wool packed into the neck of a funnel.

Were the barrels new? And what oak are they American/French etc?
What were you told was the level of toast?

I think that he said Oak,and guessing new from the conditioning..........
The cloudiness?
Thinking on that one.

If it is not cloudiness from charcoal dust, my next guess would be something extracted from the wood (or something left over from the mentioned priming). It is not natural for the wood extracts to make the liquor cloudy, so that would make me nervous about drinking it.

Never had cloudy/hazy spirit from small barrels or wood chunks
Bits of wood charcoal etc as you would expect and simply filtered but the liquid has always been clear
Very odd.....maybe give it more time....but it doesn't sound good I'm afraid ???

Was the whiskey made using an all grain mash?
