DIY Element Guard Kit, Blue Peter Style

Hi Guys

Ive been collecting bits to start my Keg Boiler Build, I picked up a brand new 50lt keg, a couple of 3KW heating elements with a 1" BSP thread off Amazon and two weld on tri-clamp ferrels from SillDragon, one is 2" for the element connection, the other is the long 4" ferrel for the column connection, I also ordered an adaptor from StillDragon, it's a 2" tri-clamp plate with a 1" BSP thread in the middle to mount my element in.

I decided against the SD element guard kit, mainly because it seemed too expensive.

So it left me wondering how I'm going to make my own element guard, I was thinking about using a baked bean tin and getting one of them stay fresh plastic covers for the tin to mount the power cable grommet.

But I got the bits today and it became apparent a standard food can was too big, SWMBO suggested I use a yeast tin! One of her better ideas :-)

Here's the bits



Just needed to make a hole for the thread on the heating element in the bottom of the tin, then fit the element, with the tin in place to the tri-clamp adaptor, hey presto







Just need a tame welder now to fit the 2" ferrel to the side of my keg and fit a grommet for the power cable into the plastic cap

Very apt. I was really hoping for a washing up liquid bottle and some sricky back plastic though Maybe getting the power lead gromit welded into the plastic lid is overkill?

I'm glad that I didn't try to respond to this while watching last nights election shenanigans,as at that point,I was seeing the yeast tin inside the boiler,and worrying about paint.
It all makes sense at this time,and a great bit of thinking outside of the box.
