Anyone ever try a straight molasses rum wash?
Just wondering if anyone has tried a straight molasses with no added sugar? If so how much would you use per gallon and how did it turn out?

I haven't tried it, but there's some maybe relevant info here http://forum.moderndistiller.com/viewto ... f=56&t=181
I tend to use 1 kilo of sugar per gallon of wash or a bit less and I think molasses have about 50% fermentable sugar depending on type.

I've done an almost straight one.
Almost because I didn't use sugar with the molasses.
Result? Extremely pleasing. Traditionalists may not be so pleased.....

Re: Anyone ever try a straight molasses rum wash?
I make my rum like this.
1 part molasses
1 part aged dunder
2 parts water
It makes for a full flavour, and needs aging longer. I only add a bit of sugar if the molasses is low in sugar like horse feed.
If I was wanting to do all molasses with a low sugar molasses, I'd probably step feed the wash, adding the molasses over a few days to stop it being too thick.

I use what I will refer to as a low grade brown sugar. It is very sticky and not nice to work with, but it is loaded with molasses. Works just fine.

Having checked my notes, I like Anavrin and GazaTheInstructor's recipes but find them too "molassesish"
I love RumJohn's Cachaca and find myself halfway between the two.
Half molasses and half sugar has too much flavour for me. Most of my stuff has dunder in so is a complete frankenstein, but assume roughly 1 part molasses to 1 part golden syrup, 1 part demarara, 1 part white sugar, with a total of just under 1 kilo of sugar per UK gallon of water.
edit : just under 1 kilo of sugar making 1 gallon of mash, which is a little less sugar again than 1 kilo per gallon of water.
