Re: New barrel

Is it brand new? If so rinse out and then soak overnight. Should then be water tight. First fill taste daily, you cannot take oak out of a spirit. Equally you don't want to use up the oak too soon unnecessarily. Each fill will take longer as the oak changes. The flavours do mellow. Consider blending.

Re: Mission Control installation completed

Just got back from the shed, and the 60L of Cornflakes are bubbling well and sitting at 25C. My only concern is there is no cooling on the cabinet as yet. But its not High Summer, so think its worth a chance. The shed is a lot cooler than the kitchen! So will suck it and see. Cant get a bubble trap...

Re: Steam Injection Mashing

Myles, you build some smashing stuff, but I have to say I am a little lost this time. What is the requirement for an alternative to a beer machine? Is it to make bigger batches or repurpose stilling equipment to make beer as well? Or... ? I bet this is going to be obvious when you say it out loud 😁😁

Sulphur is naturally occurring, so I think it's OK.

Does it depend on quantity/application though.

Re: Big Bud Mite

Get some soluble sulphur. Couple of sprays early season should hold em. Sulphur is also elemental nutrient so beneficial if I remember correctly.
I use the 80% stuff for mites.

Double check it yourself though, just to be sure.

Valorie, The one thing in your favour is that if you get it wrong, you can always dilute and run it again! Its very recyclable stuff. Ok you will lose a little bit, but not as much as if you ditched the lot. Finding out how your still works, what works and what does not is all part of the passage t...

Valorie That is excellent news. Just to close the loop, what you are doing is turning the electricity down to the lowest point the controller curcuit will "stay alive" on. The element power is a secondary effect. This is only a technical point, if you are getting what you want. If you what...

Re: Recycling coolant water

I have considered making a lid for a 25l boiler that would accommodate 2 air still heads.
The boiler would have 2 x 2kw elements, quicker heating.

If you ran the boiler at 700 - 800w I think you could have a very nice, sensible volume, air still.

And not a drop of water wasted.

I suspected this might happen depending on how it was wired.

To get the best out of it, it will need the existing gubbins bypassing.

Happy to help you with that.
