Repairs etc ?

Post by phantom » Sun Apr 28, 2019 9:55 pm

Put mine on this arvo, only to work out (process of elimination) that it was causing the power to trip out.

Never had reason to take it apart, so anyone know if it's easily repaired at all or is it a case of getting another one ? ( It's about 8 or so years old and yes, I reckon I've had my money's worth out of it)...........

This is a stab in the dark.
It may have water /damp inside? Somewhere?
Just a splash of water on the plug would be enough.
Try leaving it on a radiator/boiler, whatever you have, for a few days.
With other electrical items, this has worked for me.
If that doesn't work, and you remove the central nut on the base and see no obvious burnt out cables, then sadly, it may have expired.
Due to the cost of the unit, it may not be worth further examination.
BUT. It is a two component unit.
With a replacement, you could find which part is dead, and then possibly, why.
And then you may have two stills and run even faster, like Mash, and relieve the pressure on sorting your T500!
Seriously,if my finances allowed, I would stick it somewhere warm, order another unit, play around a little, and take it from there.
Hoping that you get it sorted soon.

Robert.

Phantom, your T500 keeps tripping out?
Does it cut back in if you press the reset button on the base?
If so you might want one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283142288403

If it’s the T500 - this video might help?
Shows how to replace the thermostat.
Talks about the model number, but I’d double check that if you have a UK/Euro model.

I thought It was an airstill.

Run the base on its own for no longer than 5 seconds dry.

This will test the element.

Mine (air still) is on the way out too I think, switched on with 4L at 30% for a spirit run, took ages to warm up, usually can here the copper bouncing around but it never got that hot, was still producing, but got about 600ml total out in 4 hours, I presume it's the element on the way out?

That is unusual. I can't recall having the base off - I have a nasty feeling the elements are bonded to the stainless.

Airstills are very reliable normally. Had mine 5 years use it
every week, I just keep it clean.
Have you tried putting 50p in the meter Jonx69 ??

It was a used one I got from ebay couple of years ago, so it might've gone round the clock already.
had a good look at the "cheap" water distillers as a replacement, but read a few bad reviews on amazon, so plumped for a shiny new pukka one instead!
gaza, The hamsters were going flat out on there wheel, I don't think the problem was down to them

Any links to the one you bought?
Been looking at air stills for awhile.

Cheers.
