AirStill Review (Megahome 580W)

Post by Mash » Sun May 26, 2019 6:50 pm

There seems to be a high power version of the air still.
I managed to get my hands on one, so I was interested in the differences.

The original's do not have a power switch and are rated at 320W
Inside the stainless is a full mark (indentation) but no words.
Let's call them a 4 hour Airstill – 3.5 to 4 hours is there typical runtime.
NOTE: There seems to be a newer 340w version with a switch too.

The higher power version does have a power switch and is 580W
Inside the stainless are the words 'FULL' above the line line & 'SUS316' below it.
These are much faster – lets call them 2 hour Airstill's

I did a junkahol run yesterday, first run - just to see what happened.
Initial observations are - they are quite different!

The 2hr Airstill runs considerably hotter.
It creates more fumes - there is a definite alcoholic fug.
It is worthy of note they run hot. I did not test it, but product feels hot when it runs over your finger.
I have calibrated fingers and I suspect 40-45C is the exit temperature.
I recommend glass as a collection vessel - the plastic I normally use was definitely feeling the heat.

They are much quicker.

14:50 Power on
15:10 Earliest rattle of copper
15:27 First signs of spirit
15:31 50ml heads completed
15:45 Refractometer tested product at 80%
16:45 Refractometer tested product at 40%
17:05 Refractometer tested product at 30% - power off

The product:
A. Does NOT drip out of this still. There is a steady unbroken trickle.
B. Not quite soooo clear – but this was junkohol (ullage).
C. Seems a bit less than I expected, but this was not a precise test.

I will compare the two side-by-side on an identical wash

I suspect there there may be more variations out there.
Both these stills are manufactured by Megahome Corp – I am not sure that means they are StillSpirits brand or not.

Hi Mash - I’ve was looking at the Megahome versions for ages, so I believe that the one you have is not the alcohol version, but the super dooper marine grade version, with the 316 stainless boiler, suitable for sea water purification.

They do an alcohol version, which has a 325w boiler.

Perhaps that’s why you’re seeing such a difference?

Another thing to consider is that the 316 version probably has a chlorine vent.
You may need to block that off.

It has a 565w boiler and 15w for the fan.

I ended up buying a Chinese copy with 750w because it was only €58!

Yeah. I bought this one on price.
Was surprised by the power rating.

I bet the 750 is very quick do you think it needs a power controller?

It’s definitely going to need a power controller. Both the still, and the controller are waiting for me at home, just going to be another 2 weeks before I get there!

Please keep us updated with your experience of the 316 - I’m bound to have similar issues.

Cheers.

I have a feeling this is going to be a dual purpose still.
Flat out for stripping, 1/2 power for spirit run.
Could be a cracker.

How’re you getting on with the new airstill? Got that power monitor yet?

My €58 clone has arrived, and I’m impressed with the quality, even though it’s only 450w instead of the 750w listed (checked with a borrowed power monitor).

Only ran water through it yet, with the first drips at 30mins.
My voltage regulator also arrived, so it’ll be fun trying it out this week.

BTW - it has a metal fan, only seems to draw about 8-9 watts, and I couldn’t see a chlorine vent in the condenser.

I think 450w will be fine. You might find it needs trimming down a little once it is running.
