Cleaning an air still?

Post by borntobewild » Thu Jun 13, 2019 2:03 pm

I only clean my still with boiling hot water and nothing else, after every batch I take the lid off and pour hot water in the little hole 3 times.

Is that enough or should I use something else every so often? Guess I'm worried the hole might get clogged up at some point.

Good question, I find it very interesting what others tend to do.
I guess there is no better desinfectuin than running the still with clear water; hence; steam desinfection.

I confess to never having cleaned mine other than removing any crud from the inside of the kettle with a little bit of heads as soon as it is cool enough.
Slowly slowly, catchy funky

I clean mine with brewers bleach. Reason is Gin is
a dirty business.

I do a water run before I any gin run. It serves two purposes. Firstly it cleans the still and secondly I use the distilled water to dilute my gin down to my preferred ABV.

When I do a water run I always discard the first 250ml because it smells a bit funky - a slight stripping run whiff. The water that comes out after that is perfect though.

I tend to run spirits inbetween gins. But apart from that I am only cleaning the kettle with TFR & a scrubby

Ok then, I feel better now I know everyone is pretty similar.
Wasn't sure if people maybe put a bit of vwp or something similar inside the lid every now and then.
I'll continue as I am then, maybe use a bit of the heads to clean as curmudgeon suggests

It's a boiler. Just keep the crud down.
