My hate relationship continues...

Post by Jules »

Guys I need your help. Again. I think I might not be cut out to use the t500 column 😂 love the alembic and have been using it lots but only use the t500 when I really really have to. We just don't get along. It was time for a clean so I did that, thought I would remove some ss spirals off the bottom and add a roll of copper mesh instead. When I turned the water on, it came out the temp sensor hole instead of the outlet.

So I shook it about a bit and then it worked for a bit but not pole before. I took the mesh out and repacked the whole thing but now, no amount of shaking will stop the flow out the sensor hole.

What am I doing wrong here? I'm losing the will to live 😭 have half a mind to bin it and buy something different so you are my last hope

Taking it apart again I can see that there's nothing in there that's causing it. My outlet tube is pretty long so will try with a shorter one and not let it run in the bud. Unless one of you has the all seeing eye and can suggest something better lol

Another question for those of you using copper mesh. Would one 10cm roll, 1.5m long, at the bottom of the column, change the abv from 93 to 70? I felt it was a bit drastic for such little copper but I have come to realise that I don't know as much as I think I do 😏 so maybe it's normal

I'm going to ask the really stupid question here, but have you got the tubes connected the right way round?

If you've got the input on the output side, it shoots out the temp sensor hole (don't ask me how I know)
I'm not under the affluence of incahol, thinkle only peep I am. Its just the drunker I sit here the longer I get.

That is a fair starting point DS.
I have never run a T500, but some issues are generic.
Length of hoses should not matter.
Coiled copper mesh should not matter.
Balancing the water flow is I think the most important factor with a T500 column?
And allowing time for equilibrium and take off at the correct speed.
Running in Reflux mode is not the same as running in pot mode.
Expect it to take more time.
I can run my own very silly column slowly and get 93% or faster and get 80%.
I hope some of that helps.

Yes that does help Ed thank you. I have run it before but it's never a smooth run, there's always some issue with the thing.

DS the tubes are in the right way around. That was the first thing I checked, as I have also made that mistake before lol. If I take the outlet tube off, it works fine so I might just put a new tube on and try again. As soon as I can be bothered 😏

Ohh Jules come cry on the Gaza's shoulder.
I fill and fit the column as per, then after 40 mins
or so, turn on the cooling water to a couple of ltrs
flow a minute.
Let it be for 30 mins, then turn the water down a small twist.
Temp will rise. let it settle, then another twist.
You will reach a point when its just a drip. Take off your Foreshots
then very small tweek to a fast drip tjen Heads off. Then another
tweek to drip ,drip ,spurt now your in the gravy kid run it dry.
Collect in 400ml pots and test/taste.
Mirror-signal-manoeuvre.
