Bombay Sapphire

Post by Icefever »

Ok, you gin connoisseurs, a friend likes Bombay and I'd like to have a go at making some for them. It's easy to find out the Bots....

Juniper Berries,
Coriander Seeds,
Liquorice Root,
Almonds,
Lemon Peel,
Cassia Bark,
Orris Root,
Angelica Root,
Cubeb Berries,
Grains of Paradise.

........ but how much of each??? any ideas??

Can't remember where I got this from (one the old site?) but these are the ratios I use - apart from the citrus peel, that is far too low.

X juniper
X/2 coriander
X/10 angelica, cassia, cinnamon, licorice, bitter almonds, grains of paradise, cubeb berries
X/100 bitter & sweet orange peel, lemon peel, ginger, orris root, cardamom, nutmeg, savory, calamus, chamomile

If we use X = 20g, then X/2 = 10g, X/10 = 2g, X/100 = 0.2g (200mg).

Multiply by the number of finished litres. Using only one of each division provides 32.2 grams/litre, leaving considerable room for adjustment and addition.

Cheers Flump...that is a good start, I'll have to put a shopping list together. I've got 50 lts of TPW nearly finished so I can use some of that and have a go.

That formula tends to be where I've started for experiments too, but given I'm still just using the kitchen scales it often drops to "a pinch of this, a pinch of that!"

I have noticed that Flump's list has a few added items?? I have a small set of scales that show 1/100gr because I have to be spot on when weighing curing salts for making my bacon.

I make a banana wine mainly for the SWMBO, now the last lot hasn't turned out that good. It's insipid so instead of throwing it down the drain I decided to strip it..(about 13 maybe 15 litres)...may as well get something for my trouble..

That went well, finished up. with around 2.5 litres?? It has a slight banana smell from what was coming off, so looking as it may turn out ok in the end. I'm going to finish it in the pot??? so I'm going to run it this morning, and I'm going to slice a couple of bananas and use the sight glass to see if it will add anything???.

A lovely Gin this one. Clear Gin, just put in a Blue
tinted bottle to throw us off the scent.
Go easy with the Cassia its very strong and will
dominate your Gin very easily.

You mean "Gin making by numbers" by A. Blurr (the drunken mathematician).
