Stripping in the Freezer

Post by Mash »

No Gaza not that! :D

I use my freezer to do stripping and then cut straight to a spirit run. If you use an AS this SAVES HOURS! IF you have a T500 you really could up your output volume per run.

Latest version if anyone wants to have a go...

Eleven downloads, and not a response.
Time to bump this.
I can't do this, but don't understand the lack of chat. Maybe the original post said it all?
Who is out there trying this?

Sounds good....but.....all I have except the usual 30ltr fermenting buckets are a couple of those plastic beer pressure barrels. And....I don't have a spare freezer........or anywhere to put one!....apart from that, I'm ready to go!

Unfortunately I've the same issue as StillDave :|

I was thinking about the comments on chest vs upright freezer though. Do the upright ones not have fixed shelves that do the freezing bit? Or have I just assumed that's what they are and they're only wire shelves!

My limited experience of upright freezers says that the bottom most shelf and some of the rear wrap around does the freezing.
But a difficult proposition for freezing large vessels, methinks?

surely freeze stripping is only a good option if you already have a freezer with room to spare?

footprint and cost of a keg stripper would likely be smaller.

I'm not knocking it ( ok, I am just a bit) I'm a big fan of working with what you got but am also a cheaparse , in my view a keg stripper is an better investment.

Will you tell us some more?
Google is not very helpful, and this term, (Keg stripper) is totally new to me.

I wasn't going to disagree .. but .. well .. its sort of different.

Its purpose was to be faster, by reducing the amount of runs (from 7 to just 2.5) ON AN AIRSTILL. Primarily to extend the use of such.
Positive factors / reasons:
* Uses no water.
* Pretty much plug and play out of the box - standard items everyone can use with little specialist knowledge.
* Speaking as a tight arse :D you can pick up a secondhand freezer for £20 everyday of the week - you can't get a keg stripper for that.
* You can run it unattended.
* A spare freezer is always handy between runs... better: could easily become a combo cabinet* for fermenting in !!
* Time spent "hands on stillin" is absolutely minimal
* Easily hidden from prying eyes

If space is an issue I reckon the least space is an under counter freezer combo cabinet (with an inkbird heating mod to ferment in) & run your AS on top - which could probably be stored in the cabinet when not in use? If cost is the issue I reckon that lot would come in under £150 with change for some ingredients & a sputnik?

Want do you reckon.........?

I reckon you have some valid points.

I do like the idea of having a strip done with no effort, but don't like the lack of control you have over it, nor would I bee keen of high% in contact with the plastic.
I suppose we all see the options that appeal to us and work towards that.

To be fair I've not heard of freezjacking before I've had most of my gear and mindset made up. If i was to start again and finding this place rather than HD, I may have been right there with you.

There is no one way. The "strip" is not like a normal strip... It's more like a concentrating.

There is also no high % in plastic? Or have I missed something?

Doh!
I never realised that "Keg Stripping" was simply stripping with a still, until Swedish posted his pic. Thanks.
I thought that I was missing something, new and clever!

And there is no high alcohol % plastic ratio thing going on here.
That seems to be a HD thing/hangover.

I was freeze jacking 40 years ago.
Way before I was stillin'.

12 or 14% alcohol in MDPE?
No biggie for me.
An awful lot of high strength neutral is currently shipped to gin refiners in regular MDPE IBC's.
No problem!

I know this, now for sure, because I have been asked today to travel to a remote location to a build a secure store for some IBC's for a small scale Gin rectifier.
It seems that a lot of neutral is coming from the central midlands and is winging it's way to all points, to be rectified with local botanicals to be made into "Local Gin".
It is all smoke and mirrors.
Leave it on the supermarket shelves and make your own.

There is much scope to chop and change the way that you do things in this hobby.
Maybe that is it's biggest pleasure?

sure your wash is 14%
but if you freeze jack it the booze is concentrated and thus higher.
personally I'd not do it but to each their own, I'm on other forums where they have whole stills out of plastic so freeze jacking is mild in comparison :)

LINKY please :D is that ice bowl on a plastic lid and the soldering iron thingy?

Back on high% - its not more that 14% in the ice? It is still a wash - just frezz'd.

When you separate it - yes its about 30% - but onlt the stuff you have just tipped it into the still? or am i missing summat ?

I'd have thought the slurry be higher proof and the solid ice is the remaining water?

Again, no experience with it, just my version of logic.

Bryggforum.se is full of horrid builds , PVC still be the worst one in my view but the beer can column is a close second.

RIghto - gotcha. Doesn't seprate like that - the water sort of traps it. Does depend a bit of freezer temp too.

A beer can column sounds like desperation, but very resourceful. :)
