750ml or 25oz Plastic bottles?

Post by JMaytum »

Hi all. I'm trying to find some place that sells 750 ml or 25 oz Plastic bottles? I live in Canada so preferably from there but open to suggestions. For some reason they seem to be really hard to find unlike the plastic beer bottles.

Any suggestions, recommendations greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Julian

For storing spirits? There's a general feeling around the great interweb that storing higher proof alcohol in plastic is maybe not the best plan as there's a chance it could leach into your product. Glass is more stable :)
For other products I'm sure there will be others along shortly with better info!

Thanks for the reply. I agree with you that glass is likely better but these are going to be one shot (pun not intended) use and I know our local liquor stores have product in plastic so I'm hoping I can come up with an affordable plastic solution.

Hello JMaytum,
You have intrigued me.
What is your purpose for these bottles?
The specific size is my trigger.
Someone that drinks homeade ale by the quart? with headroom?

Separately, be aware that plastic bottle manufacture is very state of the art.
A bottle made for water is not the same as one made for beer or liquor.
Specific microscopic layers are used, according to product, and you entertwine/fuck with them at your own risk.

Your term "one shot" concerns me.
After several "shots" leachable chemicals will have leached, and the bottles may be safe for anything, but where did those chemicals go?

Just sayin'.

Robert.

Hi Easydrinker!

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I should explain a little.. A bunch of us went in on a T500 and plan to make our own liquor. Having these other people hang on to their glass bottles, cleaning them or bringing them to me even is probably a lost cause not to mention a giant pain.

I understand your concerns about leeching harmful chemicals but I believe BPA free certification takes care of that?

I just figured as there were safe plastic bottles for liquor that someone else on here may have come across them. I can use 750 ml mason jars I suppose but the cost goes up then.

What I meant by one shot was the bottles would only be used one time. Not re-used at all.

I'm making the mash in a plastic container (purchased from a home brew store), I guess I was hoping for something like that chemical free plastic or something like the plastic beer bottles but those are only in 500 ml and 1 L sizes. 750 ml is the same as a 26 (actually 25) ounce bottle which is why I want that size.

Anyway, thanks for the reply and if you or anyone else have any more suggestions or recommendations I'd sure appreciate it!

ED is bang on. Plastic bottles are state of the art with a multitude of coatings.

Do you have a link to a supplier of liquer in plastic please? I have never seen it, anywhere. But I might be able to trace it.

The plastic tubs for mashing are different plastic AND typically only used upto 10-15%.
Very very different to 40-50%.

This problem is the eternal question for homebrew in general beit, wine, beer or spirit.
I solve it one of two ways. Telling them either...
"bring your bottles" or "the Liquor is a gift the bottle is a loan" I prefer the latter. Reason. If their bottles are not clean it ruins either your booze or your friendship.

Ps I do know one chap who charges cost price for the bottle. "I had to buy them" that works too.

Another option is sites like gumtree, freecycle and Facebook marketplace or your local recycling centre.
Bottles crop up, you just need to be patient. (I have a cheek to talk about patience! )

Several years ago, I was gifted a bottle of airport duty free whisky in a plastic bottle, the only time that I have ever seen one.
It does not seem to have caught on.

Drink a crate of beer, keep the bottles and get some caps and a capper from a homebrew shop.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am going to go with mason jars :)

As an aside, I live in Canada and several 750 ml bottles in the liquor store are made of plastic. One is Alberta Rye Whiskey.

Anyway, thanks for all the help and suggestions!
