Numbers and being realistic...

Postby Easydrinker » Fri Jan 06, 2017 1:44 am

My last Malt Whisky brew, 25Kg sack of Malt number crunching.

Malted Barley, added sugar and electricty, Just less than £30.
11.5 litres distilled product @ 60%. So, 17.25 litres @ 40%.
The Oak to age it I consider free, claimed from old, re used barrel staves.

My time,: at the volume that I do this;
6 x mashes/washes
6 x strip runs
3 x spirit runs

I do it all indoors while watching TV or listening to music, so timings for the above are difficut to determine.
The washes, possibly an hour of my time each. 6 hours
The runs maybe 30 minutes each. 4.5 hours
Total clean up time for the above, maybe 6 hours.
Bottling and fannying around, 1 hour
I am counting the time that I am busy with doing something here, not the waiting for a bottle to fill, while being entertained.

So, to the £2.30 cost / each litre of my product, I can add an hour of my time.
That seems reasonable for my whisky.

The Neutral/Vodka is an awful lot less effort.
I might do the sums and bore you!

Robert.

£2.30 is more than I expected, but still VERY acceptable.

I have done at a few of this type of calculation in the past. I always find it interesting. You sometimes turn up a surprise. In my beer it turned out that the greatest cost per run was the crown cap !!

I don't go into any depth on the costing of whatever I brew/still, I think that if I'm anywhere near what you guys do...time wise & cost of raw ingredients....then I'm happy to hit the £2/£3 a bottle...just me.. ::)
I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

Just realised that I forgot to include the cost of yeast in the above.
Another £3 to be added.

Loving mash's cheap brew idea here, considered throwing the four moles caught today in with the trub from the latest neutral and a few bags of sugar.
"Moleshine" appeal to anyone?
See you later in the year for a tasting. ;D

No need to use the whole mole. You can make good rum from just mole asses.

I think you lot are really cruel.
Moles are lovely little furry things
with sharp teeth and claws. So
careful how you pick 'em up ;D

Beat you to what?

I worked out the other day that it would take maybe 250-300 moles to make this
Image

The cost in 1921 equates to about £4,000 today.
And the best price that I have found offered for a single moleskin is 20 pence. skinned and dried. :o
I'm sure the furrier and silk lining account for some of the surplus cost.
Luckily the local farmers here don't require proof of death, and I can drop them back in the same hole. ;)

Grandfather was for many years identifiable by the white moleskin trousers that he wore. He was a rather large Irish gentleman until the pubs closed, then he would take on all comers for money.

Dont worry children all animals are
safe on this site.
As long as you keep 'em away from Uncle
Mash and Easydrinker (The mole
killers!!!).
Now drink the rest of your Gin and
sleep tight kiddies.
