pigeons
anyone know how to get rid of pigeons ?
i have them on all the ledges on the back of my house
laying eggs on the ground and shitting and sitting from there up
it's a wee enclosed yard but the house is quite tall - so there's dozens packed in - in layers
i appreciate the link to distilling is rather tenuous or indeed non-existant but i'm moving back to the house soon and it's turned into a flying rat hotel out the back yard since i've been away
and
since you fellas have proved a font of knowledge up to now - i thought i'd give it a punt
thanks

Hi Stout

These are good for residential areas, we have used recordings of birds in distress at one of our factories and that worked a treat. However not ideal for residential areas.

Re: pigeons
You can get several different things that are supposed to stop them perching on ledges.
The most basic one is a row of spikes you mount wherever they like to sit. There's also reflective tape you can stick to the ledges - apparently they don't lke to sit on shiny flashy things. Then there's this gel stuff that comes in catridges like caulk - supposedly the smell puts them off, although I have a hard time imagining something that smells worse than a ledge full of pigeons.
There are also these cool looking balloons:

They are kind of expensive, but you could maybe make your own.
I can't vouch for how well any of the above work, but at least they won't p155 off your neigbors like the sonic deterrents.
Try Googling for "bird spikes", "pigeon repellent", "bird control", etc.

Re: pigeons
thanks one and all for the suggestions
Operation Pigeon is gonna start in earnest next week
if polite methods fail - birdy heads will roll and feathers will fly
it'll be a mahoosive undertaking but the Stout household shall be liberated !
i'm sure John Simpson'll turn up in his flak jacket to take the credit
big glory huntin' lump that he is
P-Day minus 3

Re: pigeons
Don't rule out a culinary solution.
You'll need a piece of string with a slip-noose at one end and a few pieces of sweetcorn. Open the slip-noose to between 2-3" and lay flat on the windowsill about 5" from the reveal wall. Place a few pieces of sweetcorn in the corner near the window frame and close the window leaving just enough room so you can pull the string quickly.
Now, conceal yourself inside the window and wait for a pigeon to land and put its leg(s) inside the slip-noose while eating the sweetcorn. Once it steps inside the slip-noose pull hard on the string and the noose should tighten around the legs trapping the pigeon.
Pull it inside and break its neck. Re-set the slip-noose and repeat until you have enough birds - allow two per person.
Pluck the feathers off the breast area only and using a very sharp knife slice the breast off each side.
(the rest of the carcass is pretty much useless.)
Season the meat with salt and black pepper then fry gently in a little butter and olive oil until the meat is cooked through. Delicious in crusty bread with a little mayo or whatever you fancy.
If you try this you'll run out of pigeons very quickly and you'll be trying to attract others to your windows
They can be a bit habit forming

Re: pigeons
i had thought of this option
cos
when i see these wee walkin' dinners my hunger muscles flex like the blue bejaysus
haven't worked out if i would start with the one footed ones or indeed the eye bereft ones getting slowly eaten by the others
all things considered i might employ a net and make a big feathery mush outta the lot of 'em
iffin' you've any relatives on the streets of late night dublin , Aidan - a word to the wise - tell 'em not to be drawn in by -my- "some unscrupulous bastard's" Cooo Coooo Chicken-on-a-stick-to-go from the van off grafton street
i'm only sayin' cos it's you

Re: pigeons
I'm generally not one to pass up a free lunch, but I think I'd rather eat a rat than one of those city pigeons. You know that saying "you are what you eat"? How often have you seen those feathered rats cleaning up some drunk's vomit from the pavement? That said, you probably don't want to know what KFC chickens are fed...
Actually, I did eat pigeon when I was growing up in England, but they were wood pigeons. Do them still call them stoggies up North?

Negative on the Pelicans
They shit more than pigeons and the noise is deafening plus, can you imagine trying to fry the breasts of one of those things
