Is this smell from turbo's running in an air still??
Or standard lentil/malt/barley washes?

For me, from a lentil wash. Smells like boiled yeast, well used socks, and wet dogs.

Blimey never noticed when I ran it. But I have only done it the once as it was disappointing.

Oh, I don't think it is the lentils specifically. Most of my washes smell unpleasant when stripping too far into the tails and if I open the still while still hot. Even the clearest of washes.

I really don't think you're meant to get your snout too close to that stuff and why would you want to anyway, it's all supposed to go down the drain without ceremony.

I think no matter what you're distilling, and whether it's a strip or spirit run, the stuff left in the still will always smell bloody awful :P It's nature's way of telling you not to even think about drinking that shit :D :D :D

The wife's snout does not get that close, but it is a highly, highly sensitive and easily annoyed snout! :)

I can relate to that Chuck.

I am fortunate that I get to do all my brewing and distilling in a separate workshop/mancave and my wife rarely ventures in there so I avoid that problem.

I've no doubt that if I were operating in any part of the main house I'm quite sure it would be a different situation. :D

I am looking forward to finally changing my domicile this weekend,to one with a purpose built brew/still room,- with (hopefully,[I did it!])well designed ventilation.
It's not so much the smells that bother me,and must say that I have never found the smell from a spent wash or spirit run pleasant,it is the clutter and falling over brew bins and demi-johns that has irked me.
No longer, from now on a place for everything, and in theory everything in its place.
We'll see how long THAT lasts!

Robert.
There is no ONE way.
