PH buffers
Re: PH buffers
It is all about experimentation, until you find a good one, that suits you.
Then it is about replication.
And before I become even more profound, or pretentious I will sign off!
Good luck with it.
Robert.

What nutrient did you use instead of Trono ?

Re: PH buffers
A couple of the vitamin tablets I bought when I tried Teddy's recipe - that went rather slowly as well.
This time I'm not too fussed as it looks like it'll be done in time for when the current batch is done through the AirStill.
It'll be interesting to see whether the slower ferment results in a better taste..
Cheers

Re: PH buffers
Lol. That's what I am trying... The other way around. Does a buffered wash taste any different to a 18-20c slow one.

Re: PH buffers
Buffers are NOT a substitute for adequate yeast nutrition! It is an AND thing, not an OR one.

I agree completely with that. I've retread my notes, and I started adding the Trono at the same time as I started playing with pH - all my wishes were taking ages. The scientist in me now wants to know whether it is one, the other or both that sped things up!

I have been wishing for a crystal dragon and that's taking ages.

That will be three washes to run to discover the answer then!

Well I know both sped it up
so really only two.. And the no-Trono wash is (very slowly!) making its way to completion.Hampk

Re: PH buffers
So nearly two weeks into the 'no-Trono' wash and the news is not good - only down to 1.10. With the added nutrients this recipe reliably completed in 5 to 6 days!
Not sure I'm going to bother running with Trono and no pH buffer - might just stick to what I know works
Cheers

Re: PH buffers
But my friend,maybe purely because I am now being contentious;
My daily checking of Ph,means that I seem to get through only 2 Tsp's of Bicarbonate of Soda per 23 litre wash, and I recently bought in 10Kgs,a seeming lifetime supply.
My washes never swing the other way,YET!
I know it is pennies, but is my method not more cost effective?

Re: PH buffers
So three weeks after I kicked the non-Trono wash off, it finally got below 1.00. This wash normally completes for me in five or six days, with buffer and the nutrient.
Not messing any more - I know what works and I can't be bothered trying it without the buffer
Did someone mention kale?
Cheers

Re: PH buffers
What did I say top of this page? or maybe top of the last, if we have filled another.
We can play with new washes, but finding a favourite that comes up trumps regularly is worth a lot.

How long does your kale with buffers normally take?

Re: PH buffers
Can't comment, Mash - the only one I've done I followed your recipe to the letter, and that meant no buffers. Took about a fortnight if I recall without checking my notes.
I'm thinking of trying another kale, so next time I'll go the buffer route and see what happens.
Clearly buffers do something for my washes!
Cheers
