CORN FLAKES
Still fermenting, plus I have been distilling my last turbo batch too - triple distilled it, 4 litres of wash for the first run then splitting the subsequent runs out so that I had a few diluted to about 40% starting strength, then repeated for the third. Carbon filtered and bottled, seems to be a good one! Will investigate the cornflakes but they were still bubbling yesterday, although quite infrequently.

CORN FLAKES
My cornflake wash is STILL bubbling and isn't done yet. This room is far too cold except when the heating is on, I think an immersion heater will be my next purchase! Don't worry, I will keep you all posted with the results.

CORN FLAKES
How did yours turn out Alan?
I am just doing stripping runs on mine at the moment - 4 litres in the still, taking 1.5 litres off at 30% with no foreshots removed or anything, and no carbon filter. Once I\'ve run all the batches (5, as I only got 20 l due to the sediment) I\'ll do some proper runs and see what we get.

CORN FLAKES
Ok, here\\\\\\\'s the full details of the cornflake wash I did in case anyone cares!
6 kg white sugar
500g crushed cornflakes (Morrisons Value - 45p)
Half tin Allinsons bakers yeast
Top up to 25 litres with water
Mixed all together as normal. Put in corner of room by the radiator to get going. Going like the clappers!
NB : All the following was done with NO carbon filter on the still, just collecting straight into a glass jar. There was no carbon filtering afterwards either, I wanted to get the taste of the corn through without filtering it off.
Ran 4 litres through to 1.5 litres, straight stripping run with no foreshots taken off. Came out at 30%.
Calculated that this means wash was around 11%.
Ran 5 batches through to give 7.5 litres, split into two and topped up with water to 4 litres @ 23% each.
Ran one of these, discarded 75ml or so of heads then collected 900ml at 68% and carried on collecting another 700ml at 40% (to use another time as an odds-and-sods run).
Took a little more heads off the next batch, came out at 67% for 900ml. Mixed the two batches together and diluted to 38%. Tastes quite clean and nice even though it hasn\\\\\\\'t been filtered so that\\\\\\\'s a good sign, let’s see how it ages.
Put 2 litres of it on oak (JD chips) to age, have drunk some of the raw spirit with coke already and it seems quite nice, just seeing how it settles down now with a bit of time!

CORN FLAKES
This is aging really well on the chips, I am leaving it a bit longer but it looks really good - well worth a try!

CORN FLAKES
I distilled some beer and put it in a glass jar with some burned oak chippings. It turned out nice, so I did the same with a distilled turbo. It also turned out nice. I at the same time made some plum, peach & rose hip schnapps, I\'m bottling that this weekend I\'ll let you know how it turned out.

Re: CORN FLAKES
I am considering a cornflake wash, after all variety is the spice of life.
I intend to use 5kg sugar, 750g cornflake, 25l water.
I will then do 5 or 6 strip runs depending on sediment at 4l each collecting to 1.5l each time. ( due to work I have to use a timer socket ) Using my normal settings this will yield approx. 36 - 38% abv low wines.
Then it will be the spirit run. To cut back to 30% abv prior to this, is it good practice to cut with the backset for the flavour or should I just use water and leave the backset for the next wash, 25% fluid is the advised max I have read somewhere.
Up to now I have only tried neutrals and essences, so help in flavour transfer through the process is needed.

Re: CORN FLAKES
Thanks for the info.
Having read a fair bit of info regarding it's taste qualities etc I intend to;
1. Keep some plain and age it at 40%abv.
2. Keep some more at 40%abv but give it a try with a syrup of some kind. Don't know what yet.

3. Cut some to 20% and give it a hint of honey. See how close I can get to a JD Honey styled liquer.
If I don't like any of the flavours it will be a case of recycle and re use.
I don't have access to any oak chippings at present so I am going to try the "Onion Skin" colouring. Double experiment, double the fun.

Re: CORN FLAKES
I'm Really happy with my cornflakes experiments so far, and I've only just started playing.
Last night I ran a 1.5x run on my initial ferment (1 strip run added to 1 cleared wash)
I was really taken back by how much flavour came through on this run. Just as it got towards the tails, there was a big hit of cornflakes! I was expecting the first run to not have as much flavour. Seems like there's a fair bit of cornflake tasting goodness left in the tails, so that will be added to the next finished ferment stripping run.
I have just started my second gen. wash fermenting using some backset from the spirit run.
Can't wait to keep developing and playing with this recipe. Looks like it may be a keeper

Re: CORN FLAKES
Just finishing my first Cornflakes spirit run and I don't know whether to be impressed with my product or not.
I can't detect anything in the hearts other than neutral. Does this develop just leaving it to stand. I am aware it will need age-ing etc. But when you read Jimmy's account he seems to have been drinking his within 48 hours. You wouldn't want to drink this as it stands, unless you need thinning out.
I wasn't expecting miracles but I was expecting more than this

The flavoursome smell of Cornflakes only seems to be coming through now that I am fairly well into the tails.
Confused and as much help as anyone feels like flinging will be accepted.

Re: CORN FLAKES
Hi amaark
I have found that the cornflakes will definitely come over more in the taste rather than the smell. Leave it to air for a day or so before you blend.
Did you do a strip run, or just a single run?
Also the second ferment is a thousand times better after using some backset from the first run.
How much cornflakes did you use in your recipe? I use nearly 2kg in 45liters. Plenty of taste comes through.

Re: CORN FLAKES
I can't understand how you are getting no flavour either. My complaint with this was too much flavour (I don't much like cornflakes). Did you carbon filter it? That would remove the flavour.

Re: CORN FLAKES
Hi Uber,
Thanks for the info.
I did a strip run then a spirit run.
50 ml foreshots (down the plug)
100 ml heads (kept separate smelt perfumed)
100 ml heads (smelt ok, kept separate for airing off)
Hearts Collected down to 55% abv output
Tails Collected down to 40% in 100 ml jars for airing.
Deep Tails down to 20% to add to next strip run.
Kept first 100 ml heads and Tails Jars 2,3 & 4 plus 40% to 20% for next strip run.
Kept hearts and blended first 100ml tails (after 24hr airing)
I made a 25 litre wash using 1 kg of cornflakes, 6 kg sugar.
Next time I intend to cut the sugar down to 3.5kg and follow Odin's recipe. I have heard that a lower alcohol in the wash can help the flavour come through. I have 5 litre's of backset ready to add into Gen 2.
Hopefully this explains a little bit about my run's and process.
