Breathable bungs for aging on demijohns

Postby Smiler » Sun Jan 31, 2016 3:11 pm

Just thought i'd share this. Seen a lot of posts on various forums in regard to not being able to age on DJ's due to the 'breathing' issue. Standard rubber or cork bungs don't breath obviously. Mine do ;D I made some breathable bungs using aerator stones for aquarium pumps. They're about £1 for 2 in petsathome/ebay/internet. I have plenty of DJ's and bungs as i make wine so seems logical to use em. Just pull off the plastic connectors on the stones with some pliers, poke them upside down through the pre-cut hole in the bungs and hey presto you have a bung that breathes and keeps bugs out. Natural cork prob better than rubber if at cask strength but each to their own if this concerns you. If you're worried about greedy angels then you can block some of the holes using plaster of paris or the like (only the very top of the 'bottom' of the stone will be exposed to the air so easy fix) Hope someone finds this useful ;D

Hi Smiler

Have you got a pic, I tested some of my Rum last night, it was stored in a 8 litre kilner with a wide neck, just a medical gauze to stop any bugs but the Angels have had almost 5% in the last 4 weeks!!!
