Spirit strength issues

Postby Easydrinker » Mon Jun 20, 2016 11:02 pm

I had not given a lot of thought to "airing" spirit at 60-70%
I am now doing it at 94-95% on occasion.
Really only a little "burnier" - a lower flash point, & fire point, - still a far away auto ignition temp.
But,I am trying to remain aware of a hightened risk.
Just sayin'.

@ EasyD: You are fortunate you have a low enough temp to pull that off. It is so hot here at this time of the year that at that ABV% it would evaporate before your eyes.

Mind you - might be fun watching the angels.

RJ, we do need a few advantages for living in Scotland.
I am tempted to trade them for living somewhere like Hainan though!

Re-visiting this post.
This evening, while other things were going wrong, and I was already not happy, A sealed screwtop glass bottle of 93% heads exploded in my brew room.
It has sat there for 4 weeks.
The temperature on that shelf had tonight reached no more than 36°C.
Fortunately just a mess to clean up on this occasion, and maybe a defective bottle?

I did come as quite a surprise, and I will be considering shed type storage.
Just sayin'

A lesson to all of us on storage. :o
I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

Today I was informed by a process engineer that this was a temp/vapour pressure issue inside a non pressure rated bottle!
OK, hands up, it was a vinegar bottle :D
I'm still going to try and be a little more careful.....

Yes indeed.
The volume of liquids change quite significantly with temperature.

This is why aeroplanes load fuel in pounds not litres.
